I was looking for simple way to cover up (hide) eight 55 gallon drums of fresh potable water I’ve stored in my house garage and wanted them out of sight of neighbors since the barrels are blue and very visible from outside. Then I saw you use a black trash bag! LOL. What a great idea. As they say, live and learn. Thanks for the post.

I have a rain barrel that catches the water from my guttering. It's useful for all sorts of things, especially for watering plants. In an emergency I would use it for things like flushing toilets, and washing clothes.

I purchased an orange Greek olive barrel, with a reduced diameter/screw on top. I will guess it is aprox 55 gallons. I painted it flat black, filled it to the point where the water was a few inches below where the sides began to taper to the top lid. I put in a few drops of chlorox, and the water is still clear and has been outside for 3 years.

I leave a 275 gallon plastic tub in a metal frame out all year. They are food grade heavy duty plastic. It is my back up water. I refill it a couple times a year to keep the water fresh. I live in the Ozarks so we get a good bit of winter. It freezes each year but I leave some space at the top and it has held up well. I did paint them black so they absorb some heat. You can still get water out of them thru the top by breaking the ice.

I have some 2.5 gallon jugs stored outside in a shed... as an experiment. I thought at the very least we could use it for washing up etc and save our bottled water.

If you don’t have a drum to store water then can store bottled water in its original container without worry of it freezing and bursting. Water bottles are designed to expand and contract with all temperature changes due to shipping concerns. They will not expand and bust.
