Vestibular disorders can manifest in various ways, they all share a common characteristic leading to disruption of normal vestibular function.

The progression of vestibular disorders varies depending on the specific condition. Some disorders, such as Ménière's disease, may have unpredictable episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, and tinnitus, which can worsen over time. Others, like vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis, often follow a more acute course, with symptoms peaking within days or weeks and gradually improving over weeks or months.

Complications of vestibular disorders can significantly impact a person's quality of life. Chronic dizziness and vertigo can lead to anxiety, depression, and a fear of falling. Balance problems may result in frequent falls and injuries. Furthermore, individuals with vestibular disorders may have trouble with activities such as driving, working, and participating in social interactions, which can lead to feelings of isolation and decreased independence.

In a related study titled Evolution of vestibular disorders in older adults: From young-old to middle-old to oldest-old, published in Geriatrics Gerontology (January, 2020), the results show that a decreasing sequence in the prevalence of peripheral vestibular disorders (i.e. benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or Meniereʼs disease), and an increasing sequence in that of central vestibular disorders (i.e. vertebrobasilar artery insufficiency) from young-old (65-74 years) to middle-old (75-84 years) to oldest-old (more than 85 years) patients. The study further concluded that the older patients with central vestibular disorders might be more prone to imbalance and falls due to much impaired visuomotor reflex.

However, it's crucial to note that managing and treating vestibular disorders is possible. Through a combination of medication, vestibular rehabilitation, lifestyle modifications, and sometimes surgical interventions, individuals can find relief and regain their balance. Early diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support from healthcare professionals are essential in helping individuals navigate the challenges and complications associated with vestibular disorders. With proper treatment and support, individuals can improve their quality of life and regain control over their balance and overall well-being.
