I was a host-mom for 3 Brazilian exchange students. It's been over 20 years since these boys started their exchange years. All 3 are married; 2 have children. (2 boys & 1 girl) The older 2 (ages 6 and 4) are in an English immersion school so they are taught in English and speak English while they are at school. They CAN speak English at home with mom & dad because they do much of their jobs in English. However their grandparents only speak Portuguese. I am so proud that when I visit, or video chat, they can all speak with us. Being bilingual is a true gift! I have learned some Portuguese but not enough to have a good conversation. Please keep up using both languages. Henrique will have a very rich life by knowing both languages and both cultures. He is one very lucky little boy to have you two as parents.❤

I heard once that until about age 5, a child’s brain is like a garden with many pathways. They are wide open and capable of learning so much. With exposure, they can learn to speak several languages at the same time. It’s truly amazing how they are able to soak it up so naturally. As we get older, we don’t have the same openness and it can be harder to learn new things. You guys are giving him a beautiful gift of both languages. ❤

I am PR, but born in NY. My parents only allowed us to speak spanish in the house, but we learned English watching some TV and in School.

We have a wonderful daughter, who is a Mom now too.💞
They are our pride and joy 💗

We only spoke Spanish to her in our home for her 1st two years, but we let her watch educational TV shows. At 2 years old, we started also speaking English to her and she was completely bilingual.

This has helped her greatly in her career.

Now, we are trying to teach Spanish to our granddaughter, so she can have the gift of being bilingual too.

I was a Kindergarten teacher for 34 years Twenty-seven of those years I was involved in bilingual education. Children have an immense capacity to learn and can learn more than one language simultaneously. Keep speaking and reading to Henrique in both English and Portuguese and he will learn both! Oh, I just love you guys!! Baby Henrique is the most beautiful baby!! He is blessed with the best parents!! I love that he will know both languages of his family & where he lives! He will be able to communicate with his grandparents!❤
I know this is not the same, but for years I sent my two oldest grandchildren cards for birthdays, holidays and such. When my grandson was around 16 he told me they could never read my cards. That their mother read them to them. And I said “WHY?” My grandson said they could only read printed words, schools had STOPPED teaching cursive handwriting and he and his sister had never learned it!
I was shocked! I had no idea!🤷🏼‍♀️
I started printing to all my other grandchildren after that. But I truly think it is sad that schools stopped teaching cursive handwriting!
He has since graduated college. 😊

My mother grew up in a multi-generational household where her mom spoke English to her and her grandmother spoke French to her from the moment she was born, and this continued as long as both women were alive. (Her mom was multi-lingual and taught English to French, Italian, and Spanish immigrants.) Mom remained perfectly bilingual and enjoyed speaking in both languages her whole life.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and I am completely bilingual. Speaking two languages, English & Spanish was always the norm for my brothers & I. The way my parents handled raising bilingual children was: They always spoke to us in Spanish, we watched TV in English and spoke to each other (our siblings) in English. Once we were in school, it was English all day and we spoke in English to our friends. That was the routine. We are completely bilingual and proud of it. We keep our Puerto Rican roots alive and "kicking"!

Speak both languages to your son. My children were exposed to 3 languages at birth. Their father and I speak different languages and then there is English. Our pediatrician said to speak as we always do, and in fact focus on the mother tongue because children exposed to different languages have more neurons firing up in their brain and learn to think on their feet and switch in and out of languages. She told us to ask grandparents to only speak in their mother tongue also. However, she warned us that our kids could have delayed speech because they would try to make sense of different languages. I really didn’t notice too much delay in speech. Up until 3 they only spoke the languages we did at home but of course they saw shows in English on tv. They had absolutely no problem learning English once they entered preschool. English became the preferred language. However, now my twins are 11, and I still speak with them in my mother tongue and English, and they fully understand and respond.

I am a first generation German-American, like Henrique is first generation Portuguese-American. My parents decided not to teach my brothers and me German growing up. A lot of our family does speak English, even those living in Germany, but at family gatherings they all spoke in German, including our first cousins. My dad would get upset with our extended family, and called them rude, because they’re no longer in Germany, plus his kids didn’t understand them. Honestly, I feel keeping us from learning German was the wrong choice. We celebrated the traditions of our heritage and learned slang words my mom would say, but being bilingual would have been a great asset, especially as Registered Nurse, with the option for duel citizenship. It is so hard to learn a language when you get older, so I personally feel a child should know English and the language(s) their parents speak. Starting Henrique know with both languages will set him up for success in communicating with family & friends from both countries. Great job, Ana & Junio! You’re amazing parents! 💛💚💛💚

I mentioned previously that I am bilingual. But, having lived and traveled abroad extensively, at one time, I could speak 7 languages fluently: German, English, Portuguese ( Brazil ), Arabic, Indonesian, French, and Italian. Now, years later, I still speak German and English fluently, and a little of the others mentioned. I LOVE world languages!

Love that you're teaching Henrique all the languages he'll need. That is so important - AND as you probably know, now is the time for learning language. The more languages we speak, the more other people with whom we can communicate. If we all spoke the same language, maybe there'd be fewer wars.

I have friends whose children speak English (mom) and Danish (dad) at home and Spanish with babysitter. They are completely fluent in all three.

I’m from Argentina 🇦🇷 I came here to the USA 🇺🇸 when I was 10 years old. I also spoke only castellano ( Spanish) to my kids and they learned to speak English in school. Two of them speak it and write it and read it fluently, but my youngest can understand some and speak a little only. He’s 21 but I’m still working on him to learn it. I have a granddaughter now who I’m teaching Spanish. But is hard when the parents speak to her English all the time.
You are doing great to teach Henrique Portuguese and to learn about his roots. I love your channel. You both make my day when I see your shorts and you are dancing is very nice to see a couple love and respect each other. ❤❤

🎉This is wonderful news!! The secret is when Henrique starts school and speaks English fluently only speak to him in Portuguese at home. Living in the US he will need practice speaking Portuguese. Also, teaching him how to read and write in Portuguese will be beneficial. Can't wait to see him speaking Portuguese in Video chats with his grandparents. I think he will say "mama" first and I love "Papai" 😊

Your child will learn English at school and with friends. Speak only Portuguese at home so he could learn and communicate with family. Children that speak two or more languages develop their brains very smartly! It’s a great idea just to have him attend school in Brazil whenever you visit, just for fun, even if 2-3 weeks only. Learning multiple languages is easiest when you are very young — it’s imperative that you teach the written language, too!

it's also respectful to speak the language of the land, when you're there. I'm an Italian Sicilian American .living in America. I'm American, with italian sicilian roots, but it's respectful as my parents taught me, to honor where you are. So when I lived in Mexico for a year, I didn't speak a word of English-- out of respect.
