23. The BEST temporary bond

Years ago in my shop, temporarily attaching boards meant using hot glue. I found out early on that this wasn’t the best solution as you undoubtably leave behind plastic residue. Next, I turned to ‘double sided tape.’ The term “double sided tape” is a bit broad though as there are several different types. If you want excellent holding power and little movement, go with carpet tape. There simply isn’t anything better to use to temporarily hold wood pieces together.

But let’s go farther down this sticky road, because carpet tape isn’t always the same. There are two types of carpet tape that you should buy for your workshop. If we look at both side by side, you can see the difference. This lighter version is less sticky and works great with thin wood that can be damaged when it’s time to pull your pieces apart. Due to it being less sticky, it doesn’t work as well with stock with more mass. This thicker version, on the other hand, uses filaments and is a powerhouse that sticks easily to just about any surface. The bonus is how little you need to attach two pieces of stock together.

Because both tapes look the same on the surface, I add the letter “L” and “H” in the inside roll before I put them away.

Thank you to my patrons!

So the most effective method i have found it sticks very well Adam Savage uses it actually, take masking tape put it on both surfaces and then take super glue and put it on the masking tape and stick the two masking tape pieces together it holds very effectively

Painters tape strips with superglue dots in between them so virtually no glue touches the wood and it comes apart easily when you want it to.

Masking tape and super glue. Everybody knows that

You can dissolve the hotglue bond with alcohol, espacially denatured alc. Works well with finer woodgrains and most other surfaces. But be careful with some plastics.

Tool tips that are actual tips and not just someone shoving a potato into a pipe and covering with jb weld. Amazing!

Best thing to use is two pieces of painters tape then glue them together. Leaves no residue and easy to separate when you want it to come apart but holds very well. Very common with knife makers when trying to work on scales for the handle. If you want to see this in action go check out Alec steel or Will Stelter

Masking tape and superglue. I learnt it from Ben Crowe at Crimson Guitars

Try the hot glue again. You can use rubbing alcohol to remove.

Try Shurtape DS 154. It's a little hard to find for a good price, but when you do, it's amazing. Painter's Mate also makes a very similar double sided tape that also mimics the superglue/masking tape technique.

3M makes an industrial double sided tape that rivals a bond made with epoxy, it’s awesome. I about delaminated fiberglass pulling an aluminum block off after I stuck them together

Hey Rob, try denatured alcohol to remove hot glue. 😉

I use brown paper towel and two drops of crazy glue. Then I sand it off

I usually use masking tape on the surface of each piece, and double sided tape on the masking tape. Easy to remove, but still holds great! And no need to wait for glue
