Mardin, Southeast Turkey. Exploring southeast Turkey with Mick and Trudie Scarsbrook (Mick Amca), Part 1 of a 5 part series
Mardin is a place in South Eastern Turkey close to the Turkish/Syrian border.
It’s part of Turkey that both myself and Trudie have never explored before.
We made the decision to visit this area and include Hasankeyf, Midyat, Nemrut Dag (Nemrut mountain) near Adiyiman, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa (Urfa), Gobeklitepe and to help get rid of the stigma attached that can put off western tourists visiting because of its close proximity to the Syrian border.
Day 3 into our tour and whilst in Mardin news broke out that American troops were pulling out of Syria and Turkey was going to make a safe zone for the Syrian refugees along the Syrian border.
Ours families back in the UK were seeing the news on TV of towns being shelled on the border and were concerned and worried for our safety!
We watched the news in our hotel room on the Turkish TV and it also was showing shelling of houses.
At this point I put out a short film expressing we were changing our travel plans and would head North away from the border.
This actually sparked a lot of comments and one lady in particular wrote “you have gone to the area to aim at showing the reality that it is not how people see it on the news. Surely by heading North you will just be the ones adding to the stigma and put visitors off coming to the area”!
This ladies comment was absolutely right. So we chose not to listen to the news and actually listen to the people who were living in the area itself.
We are so glad we continued our journey, and not once did we feel in danger from anything or anyone.
Please watch and enjoy our five part series to the amazing, Southeast Turkey.

Mükemmel bir insansın mick amca. Gerek çevre kirliliğine duyduğun hassasiyetle birlikte bunu aynı zamanda dillendirmen, gerekse de mütevaziliğin çok iyi. Sizi severek takip ediyorum. Sağlıcakla kalın.

I love watching your videos! I've been to Turkey twice. I've lways wanted to go to Southeastern Turkey (especially Diyarbakir), but none of the tours from South Africa go there and I don't want to go alone. Now many places have been damaged by the earthquake. It is so sad.

the real Turkey, free of all that tat we instil in the areas we invade as tourists, no burger bars, no British bars serving british chemical infused gnat's water, commonly known as carling and carlsberg, let's hope it's left like that, maybe we've found our new location to holiday in 2021 and we now don't have to avoid Turkey, like we did Portugal, Spain, & Greece before, although I'm sure there are places left in those countries like this, we just didn't have access to the internet back then. Thanks for providing this glorious insight Mick & Trudie, and very much looking forward to the second instalment, bless you both

Hey Dear Mick and Trudie, a very nice video. Do you know that the little pools at the Medrese are used for teaching astronomy to the students. The stars are reflected to the pool so that the students didn't need to look up for a long time, instead they looked at the pool and see the sky.
