the official "steam" diesel locomotive. I just loved looking out the window and having snow fall off the cab down my neck and back! The cab heaters must of come from an old VW bug. Boy they were cold.

When I drove buses, getting the Detroit's to start was fun. They'd run this smokey at least the first 10 minutes. We're at a remote depot of 5 buses. 530, 600, 630, 645 and 715 pull outs. They kept a 20 lbs gas bottle, 15k btu tank heater and some wooden matches in a wooden cabinet.. The first driver would arrive at 500 only get about 15 minutes heat on the engine before trying to start. Then he'd move it to the next bus. You'd turn it over about 545, so you and everyone else would get 30 minutes of preheat. The last driver would forget to shut it off or put it away, so it would run all day. The first driver would call the main depot to bring a new bottle of gas. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. Sometimes you didn't have time to shovel either.
I remember pulling up to the 1st stop, maybe the thermometer on the dashboard read 26-28. They all wanted to kill me!
New system, radiant heat parking lot, no snow or ice. All buses plugged in at light pole to block heater, , the dispatcher could remotely start the engine 5 minutes before you are scheduled to get there. You'd pull out never less than 50 these days and a 10 minute drive will generally get you to 65. If I was still driving, what a different world.

It's just doing what ALCOs do best.

Some say it was an active volcano that day but few know, it was just Dimitry and his Diesel loco starting up

rule of thumb...dont shutdown big diesels in the winter...let them idle....

For a non-diesel person such as myself and when watching a loco from an external view such as in this video, at what point is the engine considered running on its own?

modern inline 4stroke diesels like a Cummins N14 will start pretty easily in cold weather if the fuel isn't jelled, in real cold (below zero F.) a good shot of ether in the intake may be necessary.

Hope someone is here to answer my question,   remember these well, ok  always sound like going to explode , some of the noises like marbles etc  .  Last question what was the advantage to these 4 stroke, vs gm 2 stroke engines ???
