Skydiver becomes first to land without parachute – video

A 42-year-old US skydiver with more than 18,000 jumps makes history on Saturday when he becomes the first person to leap without a parachute and land in a net instead. After a two-minute freefall, Luke Aikins landed dead centre in the 100-by-100-foot (30-30 metre) net at the Big Sky movie ranch on the outskirts of Simi Valley. The first *willing* person to land without a parachute. As rare as it might be, there have been people who have survived hitting the ground without a parachute. Not taking away from this guy - this is amazing - the skill and precision needed to hit the target, and the guts it took to DO this is incredible. :)

And this year's Balls of Steel award goes to...Word is that he was not wearing his helmet for protection, his helmet was wearing him for protection LOL! I tell you what the most incredible aspect of his jump was - that he had the mental fortitude to do a few trick manuevers while descending (!). One would think he would be as focused as hell on the target as soon as he left the plane.
Notice that he came quite close to missing the target, since he landed about 20 feet from the edge of the net. I think when he sees the footage of the landing, he would not do it again.
