What are your thoughts on the Cathars? Were they an important religious sect or really a non-entity, just a slight variation on Catholicism most of whose members did not even view themselves as anything but Catholic? The Freemasons also seem to have retconned their own history into a myth that they are in part related to the Templars. Maybe you go through this in your book.

The Catholic Church didn't need to be hijacked nor infiltrated, like so many people think.. from its very foundation it was crafted to be the mothership of evil.. "Come out of her my people lest you partake of her sins.." ( also "..lest you partake of her punishment" )

Bec they served Mamon not God. You can only serve one master after all. And so the god of money rewarded them well, but he can't really keep his own servants safe, many times when it serves his purposes he enjoys betraying his own with glee
