I thought all this depends on if consciousness is emergent from intelligence or not? This is a question we don't have an answer to as we humans do not know what consciousness is yet. Either of these guys could be correct but why did the video not point out this variable (emergent consciousness) as what the debate hinges upon? Or am I incorrect?

I'm amazed by the total lack of foresight of old Prof. Sharkey there. He talks about current and future AI as though it's code is 'hard wired'. Is he unaware of the advancement in deep learning software such as Viv which writes its own code depending on the task it has been asked?

The mistake many people make when trying to extrapolate tech into the future is they base it on a linear extrapolation on today's technology which is totally incorrect. It's actually exponential, all previous data going back decades shows this, it's a basic fact.

I'm with Ray Kurzweil on this, who incidentally has an excellent prediction track record historically, in that a lot if this technology that is being dreamt about is going to happen quicker than we think and some technology we haven't even imagined will be there to surprise us also.
