Downspout Dos and Don'ts in 2024

The roots were terrible when we were putting in this underground buried downspout, thanks to a silver maple growing right in the middle of this yard. They're aggressive trees and crush pipes of any kind. Our number one goal is to build our customers an underground buried downspout system, French drain, yard drain - you name it - we want it to last them a lifetime. We spare no expense. When you want it done right the first time give French Drain Man a call at 248-505-3065.

Absolutely love your work FDM. Am 70, female, spry...but dang this is a big diy project for me. Downhill slopes two sides, 13 trees in small yard, clay soil, granite...I am not in your area but have watched a lot of your videos and am so appreciative of your explanations. God bless and protect you and your family. Much love from Delaware ❤️🙏

I live on the other side of the country but we're building a house DIY that needs careful drainage and I'm learning so much from this channel to help us get that right!

Always great info, Robert! Between you and the Apple Drains channel, I feel like I’ve learned a lot.

Good information, I went to the store and bought several Rain Gutter Downspout Extensions.
- They have to be moved every time I mow the yard.

I have always struggled with water in our area, never realized how poor the previous owners had done trying to take care of these fairly simple issues! Never so thankful to have come across your page, I have a DIY Downspout kit on the way from you!

I've watched some of your vides, you say NOT to put a catch basin in if your downspout is near a tree. Unfortunately I have one that I need to run and will be tough to get away from the Maple tree it is near, is it better to not have a catch basin and just slope enough and clean it out over time at the pop up? It will be 25-30' from house to get desired slope. Thanks again for all your videos!

Did mine the wrong way, it’s worked great for the last ten years, I just pull off the cap and clean any debris about once a year if that. So far so good

This may not have anything to do with anything but did anyone else have to pause the video to make sure the police sirens were from the video and not coming from down the street outside your house? 😂

When I had a concrete patio installed, there were several underground system installed to handle the drainage from the gutters. Two run under the pation and the third just runs underground. None of them has ever worked correctly. For one, the rain water just pours over the side of the gutter and for the other two, I have no clue where the water is going. Not dumping over the top of the gutter but also not coming out of the popup either. Don't know if it's bad installation, gutters need replacing or a combination of the two. Unfortunately, you aren't in my area, NC, or I would check you out.

Hi very informative. Do you have a video covering slope of pipe ex how much per 10 feet of ipipe?

I always thought you had to stay away from the property line with your discharge in Michigan. I could be wrong but i thought code was minimum of 3' from neighboring property.

I’ve been watching you on YT for sometime in hopes you have a solution. I have a large area with no slope … the 3” pipe discharges into street … very slowly. Any suggestions??

Great video. My situation is exactly like you're "what not to do" example. The problem is I have a property line. And only have space to go under a sidewalk and out. I love to send you a picture. It is sloping downgrade. Should I just put in a pop up on the vent And a leaf filter at the beginning? Thanks so much in advance.

Gutsy move shoving that hand down in there - I did that last spring on one of mine and pulled out a dead bird. :)

I think I missed where you recommend against using PVC? Do you have an explainer on why you recommend HDPE over PVC pipe?

Our outlet has to be 10’ minimum from the property line. Check your HOA and/or City requirements.

whats wrong with PVC? How can a 3" pipe be "the largest" in its class? Is 3" different in other pipes?

Curious: you said you're trying to go PVC-free? Why is that? Does PVC fail or is it an evironmental thing?
