Tenure is a category of academic appointment existing in some countries. A tenured post is an indefinite academic appointment that can be terminated only for cause or under extraordinary circumstances, such as financial exigency or program discontinuation. Tenure is a means of defending the principle of academic freedom, which holds that it is beneficial for the society in the long run if scholars are free to hold and examine a variety of views.

Pursuing a tenure track position is a lengthy, time-consuming, highly competitive process — with no guarantee you’ll ultimately reach your goal. Yet, achieving tenure is the holy grail for many pursuing a career in higher education.

Tenure guarantees permanent employment — but it’s more than a lifetime of job security and a steady paycheck. It comes with another big perk: academic freedom. You can’t be fired without cause, providing the freedom to teach and research what you choose without reprisal for stirring controversy or challenging the status quo. Jay Phoenix Singh, PhD, PhD is a Fulbright Scholar, faculty at both UPenn as well as Cambridge, and the internationally award-winning Founder of the Global Institute of Forensic Research (successful 2017 exit as CEO).

Author of over 75 peer-reviewed articles and books, he completed his graduate doctoral studies in psychiatry at the University of Oxford and clinical psychology at Universitat Konstanz. He was named the youngest tenured Full Professor in Norway in 2014 and, since this time, has become the only psychology professor to have lectured for all eight Ivy League universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, UPenn) as well as both Oxford and Cambridge. When you talk to Americans about the fact that you studied at Oxford, what’s their reaction? Do you find that having that international, more gentile educational profile makes you a better candidate for American academic positions than if you went to say Harvard or MIT? I have this suspicion that though many American academics won’t admit it or are even self aware if this that having an Oxford or Cambridge on your CV for some stint would be perceived by them as glowing in gold, far more-so than even Harvard or MIT. Am I on to something here? Asking for a friend 😅
