In the Philippines, Catholics light candles outside the church on the specially assigned stands near the entrance or sides of the church as offering together with prayers for their dead loved ones, or for personal wishes. In my hometown in Mindanao, it's common practice to light candles as offering to our dead loved ones and to pray for them so that their souls will rest in peace or finish their purification in the purgatory and go to heaven.
