Why Turning The Halo Off Is MORE Realistic

Leaving the halo on for 'realism' is a mistake. It's represented as a massive solid block obstructing everything directly in front of you. Although switching it off entirely isn't exactly representative either, leaving it on is not worth the annoyance if you're doing it in the name of 'experience'.

Hopefully not confidently incorrect...

It's true. I just got into VR and was pleasantly greeted with confirmation that the halo is not blocking your forward vision at all because of stereoscopic vision. The left and right eye perspectives are spaced apart far enough in fact, that what would normally be completely blocked from view by the halo on a single monitor, is completely visible in full 3d stereoscopic vision. The double "after image" you get of the halo (which was your arm in your analogy) is spread apart further than what you showed with a perfectly clear stereoscopic 3d vision gap in the middle. Indeed confirming what F1 drivers have been saying, that the halo does not block their forward view and feels like it's kinda not even there to begin with.

The editing at 0:47 was spot on to illustrate what it looks like. Brilliant stuff, as always 👏🏻

Amazing and detailed way of describing the real effect of the pilot's vision regarding the halo . I found myself following your instructions with my arm to simulate the effect lol

If you use TrackIR then you can set it up so that you can tilt or move your head to look past the halo. I find this actually quite immersive. As with anything TrackIR, less is often more.

I like making it partially transparent if the option is available, I feel like it's the most realistic compromise in 2D

I wish you could make the entire Halo invisible and not just the middle part, and you could do this on other cameras too, what an weird piece this Halo is, forget realism, get that thing out of my sight.

Or use a VR headset if you are concerned about realism

I find it extremely distracting in normal cockpit view I immediately new this can't be what drivers see😅.thanks❤

Eh it depends like headshake, gunsights vehicle motion... Like notice in the video you played the F1 is boncing up and down and side to side? It wouldn't in real life etheir for the same reason head bob is said to be unrealistic. Also IRL/VR/ with a off center camra an F1 driver can just look around the halo... So is it realistic to have it on or off? In my opion it's more realistic to have it on and train your brain to ignore it like IRL I presume. Which I would never turn of headshake in Minecraft eve though it does not matter as I look past it but having it on helps me see how fast I'm moving and in what diraction like rummble on a gamepad adds another input... Also how many sesiioned flight sim pilots complain about the plane moving as they manuver and or have turbulance? Like none.... As it only matters as a rafernce of motion as they are looking past it much like you would IRL or in the sim with an modern F1.
