ABSTRACT:
In science education, the phrase nature of science (NOS) is used to refer to issues in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science that are relevant for teaching and learning science and improving personal and public socio-scientific decision-making. Much has been learned from science education research about effective NOS instruction, and this presentation provides an overview that research and its relevance for effectively conveying the NOS in outreach efforts. Despite the advances in NOS teaching and learning, vexing problems persist. Science education and the teaching of history and philosophy of science to students, teachers, the public, and policymakers would be enhanced by collaborative efforts among science educators, historians and philosophers of science, and scientists. The paper ends by addressing broad issues that such collaborations should target and two examples illustrating prior successful collaborations.
