Install PROXMOX and migrate Home Assistant to Virtual Machine

In this video we’ll move my Home Assistant from a Raspberry Pi onto a virtual machine within Proxmox.
I’ll start by flashing a USB drive with a proxmox image (on my mac - more complicated than you would think!)
And then use it to install proxmox onto an old windows desktop machine I’ve had lying around
We can then create a virtual machine on there and install Home Assistant!

Command to copy HAOS image into VM:

Intro: 0:00
Boot drive: 0:45
Proxmox Install: 2:10
Create VM: 5:08
Install HA: 9:29
HA Setup: 13:10

Proxmox 8.2 install here: If you have problems with starting HA instance eg 'acces denied ...", remember to disable secure boot on the VM by tapping ESC at startup to go into the BIOS of VM. go to device manager and uncheck the box at secure bootup. Restart after this and it shoud start up

It would have been nice include a small introduction on what proxmox actually is and why it is good for Home Assistant.

Hey Will - I know this video is a year old, but I found it wanting to do exactly what you state - but the video fell short in telling me how to actually migrate my home assistant instance... How do I get the backup from my Pi onto this proxmox box?

@willsurridge Will, where is the part where you migrate from your raspberry pi over to proxmox?

What is the advantage of running a WIndows PC with Proxmox 24 hours a day over running a cheap to run Raspberry PI 4. Interesting but I must be missing something obvious unless I have a PC running 24 hours a day anyway for something like Blue Iris.

Hi there, I followed all the steps but cannot access the Web GUI on any browser on any of my PCs. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my Smart Home is currently down until I can resolve this issue.

Adding a second hard-drive which you have used before for proxmox to your system, what could go wrong, go wrong YES ?
It crashed my system faster than if I had used a hammer to it, it was format and start again .
Sorry but snapshot should only be use for software testing, you should use backups which is save to a external drive or nas share.
Like me, most of the time you may not be able to recover from a problem so it will be format and start again, AND if your backups are stored on your system drive it is bad news for you.

Hi Will - great vid, I have HA running on a quad core AMD Dell Thin client on proxmox. Is there an easy way to backup the HA VM in it's entirety, including the proxmox config, HA version and HA config in the one file for an easy restore. I messed up my home assistant VM with a core update and had to rebuild HA from scratch.

So you didnt really did a migration of HA, you just installed a new one.

The title says about migrating the data, and there was nothing about it in the video. I'm disappointed.
