This video shows the hand work and machining needed to prepare and assemble the legs and bed of the PM Research, EL-1, miniature lathe model. I made some subtle changes to personalize it. Part B will show the bed rail final machining. Take a Look !!

Hi from Bournemouth UK I'm a retired tool-room machinist with a lot of milling, and surface grinding on jigs and fixtures I get alot of satisfaction watching you work It takes me back You remind me of some of the true craftsmen I've worked with over the years with you're attention to detail, lateral approach to problems and constant renewed enthuiasm You sir are gentleman and scholar It would have been a pleasure working with you

I'm having trouble coming up with a very descriptive word for this series, but here goes ! ( The coolestness of this project is overwelming!

There's a saying "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear". Well, I reckon you did Joe - that casting left much to be desired. Excellent work as usual !

Great work again Joe! Thanks for sharing. This one reminds me of my apprenticeship days 26 years ago. For the first 6 weeks we made everything with a file. Projects after projects using only a file! This was also where we were introduced to scraping but with a hand ground scraper (File) I'm so glad I learned machining the old school way from the old toolmakers. I heard you mention your OCD I'm the same way if it's not where I want it I can't sleep at night! Thanks for sharing your work with us Joe I really enjoy your content!

Not many have the skills and experience to do this with a manual machine .Exceptional work Sir.

Awesome. Really a challanging project where all the machinist skills must match with eye and patience of modellist.

Good job letting the radiii on the legs protrude; looks much more authentic.
I'm gonna need new glasses to keep watching all those small parts being made lol.
Great video series, Joe 👍

Hi Joe,
Another example of some nicely done machining. I am enjoying watching this video series. Glad there is still more to come. You and the family stay safe.

Unbelievable. I probably would have sent the bed casting back for a replacement. Most model casting companies do that. I know Stuart models does it with a couple of pictures of the bad casting. Nothing worse than finding a blow hole at the finnish dimension after hours of work. You sir are one in a million.
Great job and I can't wait for the next video.

It is starting to look like a real lathe now.
I am loving watching this little lathe build.

I was noticing that you use the edge finder as I had learned to use them and I was wondering if you could do a video that reiterates how to use edge finders, telescoping gauges and some of those sorts of things . Awesome channel always more to learn ! coming from a retired toolmaker

Absolutely amazing work! I feel like I learn a dozen new techniques and tricks with every video. My only request is that you save some turned brass piece for last and use the lathe to make it!

I see Joe Pi, I click and click like, I know before I watch that it's gonna be good and I'll learn something about setups.

Well done Joe. The video was awesome but the craftsmanship was even better. I have learned so much from you over the past year that even my projects are starting to look like something other than a fishing weight. Thanks for the excellent instruction.

Joe that is a beautiful piece of functioning art work. A Master craftsman sharing knowledge is awesome. If we do not invite the younger generations with interesting projects such as this to challenge their minds, our skill set will be lost forever. I'm an old dial reading, tool grinding, hand crank turner myself and young manual machinist are getting hard to come by.
