Deep down his intuition was telling him that light was the mastermind behind it all, matter of fact he wouldve solved the case for good if it werent for the police and those helping him. The police were the ones convincing him it isnt light, without their annoyance, L wouldve solved the case. It makes it that much more sadder when you realise this, his death wasn't even his mistake, it was the shinigami who couldn't control her feelings enough to obey shinigami principles.

L was such a smart and well written character. I cried when he died.
