This video covers the open stance forehands vs the closed stance forehands. The open stance forehand is not a new concept. If you take a look at some of the matches from the 70's and 80's you can clearly see that the open stance forehand was widely used on both the ATP and the WTA tour. In the 1978 French Open final between Borg and Vilas, both players struck the forehand primarily with the open stance technique. In modern tennis, the frequency of open stance forehands has increased to the point, where players on both the ATP and WTA tour almost always hit from the open stance position. In this video, you will learn the biomechanical reason why the open stance forehand has been the preferred stance for decades. You will also learn when it's appropriate to strike the forehand from a closed stance position.

Hey Nick! Great video that explains the mechanics of these stances. I usually do not focus on what stance to hit from either. It gets easier to decide as you play. Do you want to collaborate sometime?

At a lower level I didn’t get your videos at all, but as I pass from intermediate to advanced it’s all gold

Very helpful explanation. Your swing fluidity and consistency is amazing as well.

I like what you say about not thinking about stance....in fact, my key thought is not open or closed too ...it is pivot on right leg or pivot on left left ...

You are a very good teacher. Thanks. Not being critical, but I have just one note. I think you might add an explanation and drill that discusses the footwork toward different balls at different spacings, that is, side-to-side: into the body, normal (one or two steps to the side), and wider (more than two steps to the side), and depth: ball is at players depth, ball is deep and player must move back to return, ball is short and player must move in to return. How to use shuffle steps vs cross over and both in combination to get into the best position to strike the ball. This goes hand-in-hand with the open vs closed stance being the more appropriate (comfortable) stance from which to hit the forehand. A longer lesson, I know.

Very interesting. I never really was aware that I mostly use semi open naturally. When moving forward it changes to a neutral stance. Recently my coach started saying I need to hit majority of balls neutral. I am trying that now and my forehand completely collapsed, very frustrating and discouraging, not hitting amything. I know think for everyshot about my stance ! I will follow your advice, hopefully my FH comes back !

Very helpful thank you. It ight be more helpful to have the camera at your back when hitting the ball so we can have a better angle of the stroke. Thanks again!

Closed is not really closed though - when I was taught it, the back leg did not come around. The modern closed stance is a hybrid that allows rotation.

You meant to say Square Stance? The term Closed Stance can be misconstrued. Proper term is Square Stance (left foot at 12, right foot at 6'O clock). Thank you.

Good but Most hit Semi ? Why is semi not mentioned.
Big difference between a SEMI OPEN and OPEN stance .

What about an average club player does the open stance give better coil unload on the swing ? I have terrible timing on my forehand my arm seems to stop at impact to the ball and breaks down lot of the time I think the issue may be having a closed stance, the swing unit turn on the forehand has never felt natural it always seems to be out of control, I don’t think I finish the stroke over my shoulder but stops more at stomach height ... I probably need some coaching and practice on it

If I don't think about which stance to use, I end up hitting everything open and spraying balls all over the court (and back fence). I think the better advice is to try to hit everything from a closed stance (except balls high over your shoulder) and if you get pulled out wide so that you can't get your feet set, then open stance should feel natural. I never want to hit open stance from the middle of the court.

You stepping in ? Locking out more like. Stepping in is not better than semi .
Although correct all stances needed.
