I found a neighborhood I can get all the leafs I need to cover my garden 3 times. But I'm going to put what I don't need for the garden in my chicken pens. It will make great compost for the next year.

I would guess that a mix of compost materials is actually a healthier way to improve the soil. It may not look as neat and tidy, but what forest floor is neat and tidy - or covered with just leaves? There is always a litter of branches and fallen trees breaking down. Using what you can find is just flat out smarter on multiple levels.

Just finished covering my garden, about a week ago. I used fall leaves, newspapers and some grass cuttings. As long as the garden is covered in an organic material, I don't really care what it is. Fall leaves are probably my favorite, but it is not the only thing you have to use.

I’ve been adding all kinds of organic material to my garden knowing that I will be rewarded with an abundant harvest next planting season !!!!

Adding organic matter to a soil will lower the PH. I asked the University of Arizona what makes a clay soil clay and the reply was lack of organic matter. Lack of water will create a high PH soil. That's why desert soils are alkaline and rain forest, temperate areas have acidic soils. My PH was 10, so I buried all the organic matter I could find and watered it daily. Peat moss which has a PH of 3, coffee grounds, wood chips, yard clippings, paper and vinegar. When you add an acid to calcium carbonate, which is what arizona soil is, the acid reacts creating carbon dioxide. I had actual soil a year later, no more caliche.

"I've never been able to get enough of any one of those things to cover the entire garden." Thank you for that comment. I think new gardeners are frequently intimidated when well meaning YouTube providers say, or at least imply, that there is only one way to reach a certain goal.

I use leaves, grass clippings that I mulch and hay from people that don't want it anymore after the Thanksgiving holiday that have used it to decorate their porch or yards.

Does deep mulch kill off wild onions or garlic?
Thanks

Rupanya bahan terbuang jadi benda yang sangat berguna untuk tumbuhan. Selama ini tak pernah terfikir.
