There's another way to get this ending, by failing a certain timed encounter. Only a complete fool would fail to notice the turn counter and waste all their time, which is why I know about it.

If you quick save during this cinematic and reload you and your party are all transformed mindflayers in some weird area, but you can fast travel back to camp and keep playing the game. You and the party have all the skills and abilities of the full mindflayers you become at the end of the game (if you choose those options). I didn't finish the playthrough this way but I did keep going a bit and the game seems to work still.

I love how they could have just added a hard block to the action and not allow you to do it but instead they animated a whole scene for when some players inevitably try to do it.

Props to Larian for being able to guess so much of the dumb shit we would try. Most D&D thing in a game

Glad they fixed that part of the game. Before a patch, you could knock Orin in her monster form off the edge and lose the stone permanently - I had to load a save when that happened. She was knocked off because I used a massive explosion combined with putting my party all into a globe of invulnerability to deal with that.
