Renting a tank is a terrible idea.You cannot shop fuel prices, they can basically charge whatever they want.I I have found that most of the companies that rent the tank take advantage of the customers.I had to hire an attorney to purchase mine and I took 9 months but I won.And the horrible company now has 8 more people in our development doing the same thing since they found out they were on average paying from $1-$2 dollars per gallon more.If a tank is installed properly and with andode bags it will last a very very long time.My 2 cents after hours and hours of research.

I'm in the propane industry-- Account Executive. In residential, I was recommend owning your own tank vs renting them. This way if the company that supplies to you starts jerking you around in pricing, you can cut them loose easily and find a new supplier. On average a tank will cost you $1300-1800 for a 500 gallon tank. Just hire a service tech from a company, pay them for installation and you're golden.

You forgot to mention, most companies charge less per gallon if you own the tank and tanks are pretty cheap if purchased from a manufacturer and not a fuel company.

In my area, when you rent a tank they also will stop at your house and fill your tank whenever they want. So, not only are you getting billed for the fuel, you are getting a service charge of $70-$80 just for stopping. They will also do that multiple times in a month especially when the price is high for fuel it’s self. I found out this is a standard practice for all the companies. I’m in the middle of rebuilding my home, needless to say I’m buying my own tank. I’d rather absorb the initial cost of the tank.

I was threatened to have our tank taken from us. Because the company claims they sent us a contract and we have not received anything. So because it’s technically their tank they can take it.. but that ends now. I’m buying my tank..

Price differences in central North Carolina vary as much as $2.00 per gallon cheaper when you own your tank. I purchased my 500 gallon tank and it started saving me money on year 5.

Is it really 'no cost' to repair if you rent. Because every other business on the planet says that, THEN, when you do need a repair, they tell you, there is a $xxx trip fee, the $xxx environment fee, then a $xxx yada yada fee. Mmm hmm. thats what i thought. tsk.

Erm, there are pros and cons to renting or purchasing? I just heard cons. Sounds kind of shady if you, as a propane company, is pushing a very biased opinion in one direction without even mentioning the positives of the other side.

A little one sided. Of course a fuel company wants you to rent. It puts more $$ in their pocket! If the job for purchase/install is done the way it’s supposed to be, and you maintain it accordingly, you should have many years of stress free and cost effective gas service.
