I use Pimsleur for more difficult languages like Russian and Arabic. It's great for rarer, more challenging languages with less resources or ones in different alphabets.

It's not an American issue, it's an anglosphere issue. When the whole world uses your language to speak to eachother, you have less reasons to learn their languages, especially when everyone sees you as an opportunity to practice their English.

I haven’t ran into too many other people here in the US who speak a second language, but When I mention to people that I’m learning German, the question most people ask is why don’t you learn Spanish. No offense to them, but maybe it’s because I’m not interested in learning Spanish.

As a European, I can confirm that we travel to Belgium in four minutes from Paris and are forced to speak Dutch or else we would be misunderstood fully and people would think that we are from another planet.
