What do you need to pack for a trip to Japan? I think there are 8 essential items you should put on your packing list, or you can easily pick them up at the 100 yen shop after you've arrived. With some of these things, you won't realise they are essential until after you've got here, but if you have them, you'll make your travels so much smoother.

Some great tips in this video. Thank you. I would also add that packing some very small bin liners to put your rubbish in until you find a bin is a good idea. Also, soap is often not provided in public toilets, so keep a small bar from the hotel in your bag. An umbrella is handy all seasons to shield you from the rain and hot sun.

YEs. Each of these is a good suggestion.

On the clining side, i don't know if it was because i come here during the COVID (march 2023) but when i went to the public WC, nearly all the time, i couldn't find something to dry my hand after washing them.
So i suggest to buy a little towel for that. It can also serve as a napkin substitute and as mentionned in the video, you will need something in that departement.

All great tips.

My personal addition would be a portal stool. Not a full chair, but something small which collapses and can be stowed away in a backpack. Seating is at a premium in Japan and there is a lot of walking to be done.

I did figure out quickly not to just jam my rail tickets into my pocket. When I wasn't actively feeding it through gates to put it in my wallet. I snapped photos of them so I could refer to the photo for my ride details instead of pulling the ticket out of my wallet. I bought my Skyliner ticket the day before I left and that went into my wallet as well.

I'd add one extra bag to carry your trash. Japan is a very weird place because you got to separate trash and they don't have public trash bin. So, any trash you produce away from the shop, is yours to handle. I'm talking about tissue paper, empty packages, these sorts of things.

Suica cards work through your wallet. You don't need to take it out of the wallet. Just pass your wallet over the reader on the gate.

Are there many bear attacks in Kyoto? I heard of boars in that area, would the bell work on them?
