I gotta make a correction. It's pronounced "Hai-Lai", not "Jai-Alai". I don't know where it comes from, but it's a high-paced sport that gets a lot of bets placed on the games (and can seriously injure the players). The item in Annie's room is from a toy version that actually lets you put some spin on the ball so it "bends" as it flies through the air. There was a toy called "Track-Ball" that you could actually throw DOWN at the ground, and the ball would end up flying upwards because of the spin. Lot's of fun back in the day!
