Why is there no Great Britain football team? Imagine a Great Britain football team with some of football's most feared strikers - Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Will Grigg! Just wow. Great Britain has a combined Rugby and a combined Tennis team. So why have England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland separated football teams? Ed explains why...

What do you think of a combined GB / UK football team? Tell us in the comments!

I'd honestly think that if Great Britain were to have a combined football team, they would be able to do great things and win a few Euro Tournaments and potentially a few world cups.

I am not a Rugby expert, but in the Six Nations Tournament you have teams from England, Scotland, Wales and actually a combined Irish team...

Wtf, they all have the same British passport, but play different national teams....

That's an interesting idea! I think that they all would really benefit from such a unification

That would be a true superpower in football. Not only English, Scottish, Welsh, but also football fans around thenglobe would be eager to see such a strong national team (well, perhaps Germans, French, Spanish wouldn’t by all that exited about having another heavyweight rival though, wtv).

Wouldn’t it be also much more cheaper to run one unified federation instead of 4 different ones? #teamUKnow!

The rugby union teams of the four home nations play separately. They only join for a tour every four years as the Lions team with Ireland - the Republic of Ireland, plus Britain and Northern Ireland, that is.

Yes well it should be team U.K. not GB, what about Ulster

There is no UK team because there is no UK FA. We have separate teams for the nations of the Atlantic Archipelago because we have separate football associations.

Qualification for the European U21 Championships doubles-up as the European qualifying for the Olympics. Great Britain doesn't take part because England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all compete at U21 level. This wasn't an issue in 2012, because the host nation qualifies automatically. It would be possible for the home nations' FAs, the IOC, FIFA and all other participating nations to agree that any qualifying home nation can be replaced at the Olympics by a GB team but that would require far more cooperation than fiercely proud and sometimes stuck in their ways Football Associations are known for. It might also lead to political pressure from FIFA, UEFA and other countries for the home nations to combine at senior level, too — and therefore reduce their membership at the various levels of football politics.

2019 team:
Pickford
Robertson
Maguire
Stones
Walker
Henderson
Ramsey
Alli
Sterling
Kane
Bale
It’s not just English players because Scotland could have Robertson, Tierney, Ryan Fraser and James Forrest, Ireland Will Grigg, and Wales Bale and Ramsey

Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, Scoot Mctominay, Andy Robertson, Aaron Ramsay and Jadon Sancho in one team? Can't say no to that

I still don’t under the UK. How do you have a union but separate sport culture

What are you talking about? GB does not have a combined rugby team, England, Scotland and Wales are all very seperate teams, while Northern Ireland and Ireland share a team.

I think UK itself could benefit from this a lot as all the efforts are made to WIN TOGETHER what's the point to follow ruling made over 100 years ago.. while not winning more than 1 single world cup?? Cmonnn

My god imagine now in 2020 what kind of team they would have been sancho bale sterling Robertson from Liverpool Kyle Walker Alexander Arnold in midfield bale striker Daniel James in the left sterling in the right Jack grealish in middle of the midfield area Henderson in the midfield as well 3 midfields are packed with great midfielders even tho Alexander doesn’t play as midfielder but still a lot of people seem to want him to do so. so idk Arnold Henderson and grealish in the midfield area now the the wingbacks are going to be filled with lots of talent so idk to be honest but in my pick id pick Robertson and walker and now the central defence id pick Aaron Wan-Bissaka even tho he doesn’t play in that position I’m still going to pick him because he’s an amazing defender which ever position you put him along with Harry maguire there as well
And the wingers id chose Jadon sancho and either sterling or Daniel James and the striker would be either Gareth bale or Harry Kane but I’d choose Gareth bale
