Lloyd Braun, who was the head of ABC at the time, came up with the idea of a show set on a deserted island with elements of Gilligan’s Island, Survivor and Lord of the Flies.

Braun commissioned Jeffrey Leiber to write a script. Leiber did, and titles it “Nowhere.” But Braun didn’t like it, so he hired JJ Abrams and Damon Lindelof to basically rework it from scratch, and demanded that the title HAD to be “Lost.”

Despite little to nothing from Leiber’s treatment making it into the final product, the Writer’s Guild still granted Leiber a Co-Creator credit.

watching this with my moms young adult friends was so fun in the dark, the music, the feel, nothing like it, I will never rewatch it... Until I get a clear answer on this one thing, the creators said they made it up as they went along and the ending was too jarring, so jarring i remember the brothers at the end too clearly and even back then knowing it went no where, I'd love to be convinced otherwise though. OH that damn hatch felt like i was watching for months pushing the button staggeringly sad with them hahaa

Abram’s went to the same college as me. One time when Lost was in he did a talk at the school. I didn’t go, I had no idea who he was, but he ran into me on campus and asked me a bunch of questions. Anyways, eventually he was like, “when I was in school I never actually read any books, I would just make up quotes and books and put that in my bibliography.” And that’s how I ruined my education.
