LS Engine Swap Transmission Adapter Tech Talk with Carl

Deciding on a transmission for an LS swap? Carl, Summit Racing’s tech expert, explains what you’ll need to bolt-up an earlier GM transmission (like a Powerglide, TH350/400, 700R4, Muncie, Richmond, Saginaw, etc.) to a GM LS engine. You may be surprised how straightforward the job is.

I'm back watching this video again after picking up a 1976 C10 shortbed with the SM465 trans. It looks like that the flywheel and pilot bushing/bearing makes for a simple straight forward install!

Thanks for the info!

I wasted my time with other youtubers on their 20 minute videos - everybody wants to be Stacey David eh. Summit bangs it out in under 3 min. Good info

This video relieved me big time after someone told me that my existing 4L60e won’t fit. I will have to wait and see what engine I end up with to see what I need.

Thanks for this.

Short, sweet and to the point! 👍👍 But, you missed one option and that's the 4L80e "flat" flywheel, but maybe it came out after this video. Look up Summit ATP z270.

Some great info! I'll be checking it out when I begin my LQ4 conversion in my '68 C10.

I'm surprised that after all this time that nobody had caught the major typos in the description page;

"Installing an automatic? You'll need a new flywheel: link to flywheel page.

Manual transmission installs require a new flexplate: link to flexplate page."

So it's all good for Chevrolets, but if you have another GM product trans (BOP, Cadillac)you will have to find or make a bellhousing adaptor. There are a few BOP 700s that might work.

Does summit offer a bellhousing like for drag race application to mat up the LS to and early 4 speed manual transmission. I could not find anything on the summit racing web site.

Hello. Is there any information on swapping LS 5.3 into Dodge/Chrysler vehicles? Specifically, linking Chrysler Automatic and/or manual transmissions to the motor. I imagine there needs to be some type of adapter and possibly flywheel involved at minimum.

Straight to the point didn't mention anything about 2004r mating though? Might discourage some people
