The MacBook Pro 13' with Retina Display Teardown Review (Late 2013)

On Tuesday, Apple had a lot to say about the low environmental impact of its Macbook Pro Retina machines citing everything from it's EPEAT Gold rating, to it's Arsenic free glass, but we see things very differently than Apple and if you want to know why we wrote a very good article on the subject that you can check it in the link below. Previous models of the Macbook Pro Retina are virtually impossible to fix or upgrade which forced us to give the original a 1 out of 10 on the repairability scale. Have things changed in this updated version? Well there's only one way to find out and that's to tear it down!

Imagine what this would be scored compared to the new 2020 13 inch.

It is a shame that they keep making the Macbook pros so un upgradeable... I still have my 2008 17" model working wonderfully thanks to the fact of how well I can repair and upgrade it....Now the last good upgrade I can give it is a bump of HD to 1TB which I hope I can do when the SSD comes a bit more affordable. Great job with your teardown guys!!!

At 1:32 near top right corner you can see some sort of metallic foam between logic board and chassis. Does anyone know what exactly this is? After a few hits my Macbook started making an irritating rattle whenever tilted or shaken. One I opened the bottom, I saw this thing is kind of  sticking out. Would it be a good decision to replace it?

"THE BRAINS!" - I love it! What I don't love is the direction Apple seems to have chosen. I'm glad that I've bought the last non-Retina 15" model on which I was able to easily replace the hard drive and the RAM.
For new the models Apple should imho not speak of green technology at all, anymore. It feels like a big lie considerung a repairability score of 1 out of 10.

Great teardown video, though!

No surprise with this then. I remember in a previous iFixit video on the Nexus 7 where you showed the difference of 1 mm means a glued together iPad or a clipped together repairable tablet. Apple seems to be doing the same with all it's computers now too. I think in 4 years they will be totally sealed units.

It's a real shame seeing Apple being so environmentally friendly in their datacenters, on the upcoming campus and all the certifications it gets for the Macs but then not allowing people to upgrade the ram and glueing the battery. The screen too but because of the pixel density and stuff like that, it's kind of okay (in my opinion). As always great video and thanks for the teardown!

Is the single fan on the new 13" the same size as one of the two in the 15" or larger? Looks like the new 13" single fan is larger than the two that were in the Oct. '12 13" retina version.

You are thinking about the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display. Basically every iPad with Retina Display has had this resolution.

i am happy with my macbook pro retina late 2012 that i got for cheap, very cheap, and it has 2 fans and 8gb ram, only the ssd is a bit on the low side with 128gb, but for the price i paid, i can't complain!

Thanks for the breakdown. I must learn how to solder better.

Why did Apple remove one of their fans in the 13 inch retina it's just another way to make it overheat easier?

Does the removal of one fan make the computer have noticeable heat increases?

That is the resolution on the iPad air (a stupid name in my opinion) and the new ipad mini

I have a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 and the battery won't charge anymore. The cord of my charger also keeps melting, fraying and turning green. So I need a new battery and charger. :(

Please do a gaming test! With the 13 inch Retina Macbook pro! I'd like to know how the Intel Iris Pro does. Try Minecraft.
