Our "problem" is that we love all models from LandRover ;-) We had a RR Sport which we sold to our son in law, who has become also a RR fan. We have now a RR Velar and are very happy with it. Our best Landrover was a Freelander 2. Great car and super reliable!

I love my D300 HSE RR Velar R Dynamic (2019), its such a lovely car to drive and is always our choice for a all round luxury car and really happy with it since owing it from nearly new in early 2020.

Excellent presentation and comparison. The only reason you've not convinced me to by a Velar is - I already have one, my second in fact and yes, I love it 👍

Proportionally it's the best looking modern range rover period!

Great review, and I completely agree with your observations. Originally looked at the 2nd gen Range Rover Sport two years ago as a replacement for my Jaguar XF (we have 2 kids so frequently ran out of boot space), but the RR Sport was just a little too big and awkward for city parking, so went for a Discovery Sport. That was a great buy... reliable, comfortable and rugged enough to deal with the kids!

When deciding to get a second new car a few months later, with my wife ultimately using the Discovery Sport more than me, I wanted our next vehicle to be slightly more luxurious whilst sharing similar practicality levels... so it had to be a Velar! Similar exterior dimensions to the Disco Sport, the Velar really takes the levels of comfort and luxury to another level. We opted for a 2023 Velar P400e (the hybrid model), awesome engine setup, plenty of power (we frequently take it on the German autobahn) and it really takes the refinement to another level especially at city speeds. Yes... we got a 2023 model due to the very long waiting list (12+ months) after the dreaded C-word and semiconductor shortages!

I concede that the RR Sport may have the edge on interior space and comfort levels to the Velar, but the Velar is definitely the better all-rounder considering our needs. And, to our eyes anyway, the Velar looks a lot more aesthetically pleasing (even than the gen 3 RR Sport).

Our driveway is starting to look like a Land Rover showroom..!

I’ve just bought 2018 d 300 hse and picking it up on 25 of the month, you are spot on with your appraisal of the velar and I couldn’t agree more👍

Great episode, and great timing as I’m looking at a new car! I like the £30k price tag also on the 2019 Velar. Lovely motor!

I have have a 72 plate velar, P250 R Dynamic, it’s a beautiful machine, plenty of room and regardless of what people say they are very capable off road, believe me . I have thought of upgrading to the sport, but you do have a few valid points in this video .

I bought a nearly new D240 HSE 5 years ago. It is has been a lovely car. It replaced an Évoque. Very refined . Unfortunately they have spoiled the centre console with the latest version which is 100% touch control. As to reliability, I have had 3 issues. Plastic on tailgate lifter broke, front sensors packed up meaning no 4 wheel drive amongst other things. 6 month wait for parts for this. Theses were covered under my leasing arrangement. The last problem was a rear indicator unit packing up. This resulted in the whole light cluster being replaced. Minor niggles that did not prevent me from driving the car.

I had a Velar HSE Dynamic with all the bells and whistles - it looked fabulous!
I kept if for four months and handed it back. It was a total dog of a car that was in and out of the main dealer with issues they couldn’t fix.
Went back to German

I have a 2019 240 D HSE. AIR SUSPENSION.EX LR Management so loaded with extras. Bought when a year old 10k miles and now 40.000 trouble free miles and definitely one of the best cars I have owned out of 52 new since 1963. Replaced tyres, brake discs and pads and thats it. I have had an oil and filter change every 12, 000 miles to protect the Ingenium engine as it can be troublesome with long mileage between oil changes. Essential to take an extended warranty for £800 a year as if it does go wrong they are expensive.

We own a D300 V6 R-dynamic Velar. I do think the final facelift of the Gen2 RRS has road presence, more space and a superior command driver’s position. However, to get the RRS with the properly loaded kit and right looks it’s considerably more expensive then a fully loaded Velar. Importantly, the points you’ve made about size are hugely important for us because when we drive in the English Lake District and around our second home in Como, Northern Italy, here, the sheer size of the RRS and full-fat RR is just too much. Our Velar is about as big as one can comfortably manage while offering space for our skis, other long-term holiday junk and that trademark RR ‘waft’ drive experience. I think you’ve been a bit unfair to the RRS, if comparing a 2019 MY, with the equivalent Velar. However, viewers should note that subsequent MY ‘improvements’ saw the deletion of many beautiful interior flourishes of the Velar - the rotating gear knob that rises upon start-up, the lower touchscreen allowing the driver to swipe displays between the top and lower displays, the superb steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons and, from MY24, the removal of the lower screen entirely. Less minimalism and more accountants’ reductionism. As a pan-euro autobahn cruiser, alpine ski holiday load lugger, off roader or agile sprinter on Scottish twisting country roads the Velar is excellent. She’s no F-pace or Macan for handling but is pretty close. Thanks for the review video, an enjoyable watch.

A good review -have you done one versus the Jaguar F pace which is what the RR Velar is based on? It would be interesting.

What if I’m in between velar and defender90 which is much shorter and easier to drive in the city? What do you think? Would I loose a lot of comfort if I choose defender90 over velar?

Velar has a sexier shape than the sport, they should make the new sport more stylish, not so squeared,

RR Sport is bigger, and holds more surfboards & drums, more power, it is wayyy better than RR Velar... however, I will be keeping my Velar because I cannot afford a new RR Sport. only reason why

Interesting video, we have been looking for a new motor from JLR, happy to go new or second hand, wanted an Evoque - but no, too small in the rear and boot, Range Rover - far too expensive, - RR Sport - oooh, nice but a bit too big, Velar - yes that's the one let's test drive one.

And that is where it went wrong, I just didn't feel at home in it, the car was noisy especially in the rear seats, the overall feel wasn't the elegance and luxury I was expecting all in all I was underwhelmed.

Went and tested a Disco Sport and that was a better car IMHO. Fully appreciate that this is subjective and not the opinion of everyone.
