my desktop is a Dell R410 server. I threw in a graphics card and installed Ubuntu. (not running as a virtual machine) The only thing i don't like is the 2 minute boot time. Other then that is runs great. Can have endless windows open. I turned off hyperthreading because its a scam. Im a big fan of Compiz as well.

There's no root account on Ubuntu by default? You mean the root account is locked by default because it doesn't contain a password. That's just a Canonical nonsense.
Also, I wouldn't dare to install Nextcloud or anything similar through snap as these "services" are poorly configured or not configured at all and are only doing a disservice to the user. No thanks, I don't need an instant poorly optimized SNAP so I can spend hours and hours later re-configuring it when I can just install/configure my own thing from scratch that will work better. Another Canonical nonsense.

avoid Ubuntu, use other distro which doesn't based on Ubuntu.

snap is sandbox. don't fall in it.
