I like how the main attraction for this article isn't the skip, but whatever is going on in the world of this version of Foundation to have something like the sentience of the kilograms be clarified

This is one of my favorite entries in the Anthology series. Speaking as a lifelong arachnophobe, the fact that the parasitic brain-hijacking spiders managed to be _less_ disturbing than whatever the hell is going on in this other timeline is nothing short of masterful on the author’s part.

(Also this summary skips over one of my favorite moments of Nothing Is Scarier in the article, that being that the anomaly is described as being similar in size and appearance to the non-anomalous “horse-eater spider”.)

On further thought about this one, I've decided that there's something more sensible going on than appears at first. Rending Events are probably massive reality restructurings caused by some kind of entity shredding the substrate of the universe, and either the entity or the events are directly or indirectly responsible for many of the weird things we hear about in the article, such as corrosive water and Blood Sun events. Combine that with the fact that people who get headcrabbed this way seem not to experience pain or fear, either from the spider or from anything else, plus they no longer require food and the like, and it starts to make sense why people want onto this product. Even in our relatively pleasant reality, a lot of people would agree to a much shorter lifespan if it meant they were never unhappy for the rest of their time.
