The key question here is why is he on SSRIs then? Too many people are on meds because the drs told them they are better on them, even when they feel worse, or because the dr told them it's preventing brain damage, or future relapses, or balancing their brain chemistry. There's often 0 scientific evidence of this. It's all theories, myths, or stuff based on faulty science. The bulk of the evidence of SSRIs preventing depression relapse is based on studies that cold turkey people after 2-3 months and compare them with people who are not cold turkeyed. Of course people whose brain chemistry has not been stressed are more emotionally stable. This very obvious biological fact is hard to understand for 99% of doctors because arrogance and group think are powerful forces.

Repressed emotions solidify in the body, which inhibits the flow of energy, which creates numbness to real time emotions, as well as physical tension and pain.

Exercise help you deal with those life stressors. It's why it's good. Gives you more energy, better health.

The fact that you said a lot of it is based on your life stresses and the solution in that case is to work on your life stresses and the things that are causing problems. I was seeing a doctor and she told me a story - which, admittedly, I didn’t understand the point of at the time. She said a lady went in to a doctor and said she was feeling depressed. He was a “unicorn” (my adjective/perspective), as in a doctor who asked meaningful questions and listened carefully. He came to realize she was a mom and the various circumstances of her life, what all she was having to manage. He surmised that what she actually needed was more support in her life. Like a little kid during story time I asked what happened next. She said the doctor directed the patient to some resources and when she was better supported her “depression” cleared. The woman was just flat worn out and feeling despair due to her circumstances, which is a healthy response! There was nothing wrong with her brain to “treat”. Can you imagine if this was more common? Dare we dream?

For me certain life stresses will jus always be there, dealing with those problems or even jus escaping them has been exercise

Creating consistency in the gym and desirable activity outside of it has completely changed my life

Exercise and foam rolling and eating does cure my depression but.. I can’t juggle my life to do it regularly enough; how do you know what your life stresses are?

Exersize means your body will be healthier, so even if you are begging for death and looking forward to it, well too bad for you, you get to live longer!

As our friend mcb00 above shows Joe does not make the most informed or rigorously tested comments

It helps but is not a cure
Athletes suffer from depression too
The Endorphins released after exercise are temporary
Some depression is intractable
