How to Tell Better Stories: What I've Learned

This is about my experience figuring out storytelling. I find it difficult looking at a lot of my old work but it’s what got me to where I am.

I don’t believe there is any single “correct” way to tell stories, but I’ve noticed a few patterns that lace through the work of many of the best artists out there and this is my best attempt at understanding that and sharing it with you.

“We are, as a species, addicted to story. Even when the body goes to sleep, the mind stays up all night, telling itself stories.” Nathianial you represent this so much in your work ❤️ you're awesome ;)

When you watch yourself, just accept that you've grown from that day. It shouldn't make you cringe. Smile at yourself and use that positive energy to move on from there.

*#1 reason why stories are so powerful - they engage EMOTIONS*
When people feel a deep resonating feeling with what you present, they will always follow you.

To learn how to make stories is also how you reinforce your concept of yourself, and the world that you live in. For someone who also grew up being called "intense" and would need a "chill pill" or that "you don't have to think about everything as a problem waiting to be solved", I could very much relate to the call of discovering a story—the story—only to find out that it's not definite until at least, when you die.

That said, it's actually quite good for you that you put yourself out there (I mean, here on YouTube) all those years ago in pursuit of learning how to make video content. It gives you a good benchmark of where you are now, and reminds you how different or alike you were from the beginning to where you are now. It's like reading a page from a journal (if you journal, even very intermittently), only its published online.

Thank you for being intentional, and striving to be more intentional. We need more of that in our saturated world. 🍃

“It's like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. Always. All the time. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story" (The Name of the Wind)

3 *TIPS* to great storytelling:

*1. AVOID* filler words. “Like, um, yea, so, I guess”

*2.* Give the *MAIN* points of the story. Not every detail.

*3.* Show *EMOTION* and sound effects.

I am a documentary film graduate and started a Youtube channel a few months ago. I'm not uploading documentaries, but educational videos on mindfulness/self improvement. I was curious of what you were gonna tell in this video and what I would learn from it. But I think it had a great influence... I saw my documentary work and my youtube videos as something completely different... but for some reason after watching this video I feel like I know better how to implement the things I've learned from making films into making my youtube videos. I specifically resonated with your point about 'treat your audience as your most intelligent friend'. I *love* getting my audience to think about something after watching my documentaries. Making educational videos now, I kinda lost that. Thank you for reminding me of this.
Super long comment, hope it makes sense!

"I've always been more of an intense person." This entire video was like looking into a mirror! I especially loved the quotes you included, but that one line about intensity really resonated... I know a lot of girl's are often shamed for their enthusiasm, but it's so lush seeing someone say - hey, don't calm your passions 😊

02:11 - "I've always been more of an intense person, and I remember growing up being told pretty often to chill out, you know, to relax, and that always drove me nuts because that felt to me very much against my nature." Yeah, I know this feeling very well. Well said. Thank you for understanding.
