Evolution of SpaceX starships
Design of the Falcon 9 began in 2005. It first launched in 2010. These rockets use RP-1 kerosene as rocket fuel.
Elon Musk first described his reusable interplanetary rockets in 2012. It was originally called the Mars Colonial Transporter. The Dragon used this rocket to take astronauts to the International Space Station in April, 2021.
Martian Starships will use the Falcon Superheavy Rocket. Starships use 30 Raptor engines. These rockets burn a mix of liquid methane and oxygen. The Starship will have several stages, making it similar to the Saturn V rockets that took us to the Moon. However, the Starship is about thirty feet taller than the Saturn rockets.
SpaceX spacecraft are unique, because they are designed to be reusable. This is why SpaceX was designing rockets that could return to the launch pad instead of crash into the ocean. The methane fuel burns cleaner so less work is required to reuse the rockets.
