FABERGE, but it’s not an EGG? Antiques Quiz (Ep16)

Faberge of course are known for their eggs, but did tou know they made pigs? Here’s a wonderful example of a late 19th century Faberge silver pig with ruby eyes. Fully hallmarked and in beautiful condition…I’m offering these ladies £100 if they can correctly value the Faberge Pig? Would you have won the money?

Interestingly, I think, is that Fabergé himself was Baltic-German and Danish, and most of the people designing and working for him came from Finland's Swedish speaking population (Finland at that time was for a short century under Russian rule, after previously being part of Sweden for nearly 800 years). There was a thriving Scandinavian/Nordic expat community in St. Petersburg at that time. Alma Pihl, well known designer for Fabergé, created a series of "Napkin jewellery" (gift given to the ladies at dinners, hidden in the napkin) for Emanuel Nobel, nephew of Alfred Nobel (the Nobel Price founder). After the Russian revolution in 1917, most, if not all of them left Russia. Alma Pihl became an art teacher in Finland.

I thought it would be much more expensive than that. It's very cute.

The Faberge name jacks the price up, and proper Russian marks. There's a modern company using the name but making lesser quality. I'd guess 1250, which is what I'd think it would make at international auction. If the Chinese market got involved, and pigs being good luck and a zodiac symbol, 1250 wouldn't be out of the realm.
