How Game Theory Beats Intuition

No one really understood the mechanics behind Game Theory.

Even the best players in the world would sometimes succeed and couldn’t even explain themselves how they did it. This was due to the intuition that they built over time.

Players used to spend their time in casinos, observing the human behaviour of the people around them. Now, we have AI to do this for us.

This scientific revolution gave way to the potential of data analysis, which results in an optimal style game theory.

So no matter how good you think you are, if you play against someone with this mathematical foundation, intuition alone isn’t gonna cut it anymore.

It's funny how things come full circle; I remember reading somewhere, that the whole field of statistics came about because a bunch of Frenchmen (or were they Italians or Spaniards?I forget which) were trying to figure out how to win at card games more consistently...

Way back in the day I would print small data tables and glue them to the back of my pack of cigarettes and take them into the casinos. It worked, but I got some seriously dirty looks.

I very much feel machine learning is very similar to that intuition. It builds up a mathematical function over time, that you can't really reason much about anymore. It's so far disconnected from why certain parts are the way they are as they've been honed based on a lot of data.

Years ago roulette wheels were also less well balanced (just like tires), plus video surveillance was much less detailed. I knew people who used radios to feed info to a computer in a nearby parking lot, and identify anomalies in what hit.

These days they operate much closer to delivering the rigged results as specified in state laws about allowable earnings.
