Tech Tips For Seniors: Why So Many YouTube Ads?

Time for a talk about all the YouTube ads. This video is short, but worth the time if you've ever been annoyed by all the YouTube ads.

My problem isn’t the existence of the ads, but often the timing of them, depending on the video.

While I'm waiting for an irrelevant ad to end, I hit the mute button. They can make me wait but they can't make me listen.

As a small YT creator (less than 1000 subs), I understand your view. What bothers me about the adds is that many are just scams. I purchased some mini-pix cameras and could not get them to work, after more research, no one could get them to work. I see many other products advertised that seem too good to be true, hearing aids, knife sharpeners, etc. You tube needs to vet some of these or have a purchase protection plan

This is all true. We are getting a lot for a little inconvenience. We don’t expect to shop for free. At least on YouTube we get a choice between giving our time or our money

The funny thing is I don’t even clue in when the add is playing . Just like TV. Sometimes utube asks me what I thought of the last add, and I don’t even remember what it was. Years of ignoring them.

Hi Rich,
I understand where you are coming from. Ads are necessary to keep content going. I usually watch them because I know that’s how a content creator is paid. I love The Farmer’s Dog ads so I watch them. Another content creator mentioned if you watch 45 seconds of an ad the content creator gets credit for it. I more than most times watch the whole ad or at least 45 seconds of it if it goes too long. A lot of times I will take a break from YouTube when an ad comes on and let it play. I’m with you. Kindness, Teresa

Well, that was very pleasant. Thank you. I am old (85) so have watched a lot of ads over the years, Now I am saturated by them. They are every where and have become very intrusive. My reaction has been to reduce viewing time to almost zero. Its become a method of self-defense. But that's just me.

I just found this channel. I’m watching several of your videos and find them very helpful. Yes, at times, I do get annoyed with the ads but it’s not that serious. 😂😂. May I just say that is quite the setup you have for creating your content. Absolutely beautiful. New sub.

I look at ads as a necessary evil-I understand why they exist. I've learned so many things, as well as being entertained, by YouTube (including learning some valuable tips from your channel), so I skip the ones I can, and tolerate the others. I'm a senior too, and as you said, we grew up with ads we couldn't do anything about, so some things never change.

You are right, YouTube is a wonderful resource, it has helped me with computer issues, car problems, DIY the list goes on, I watch through many ads of my favourite presenters as I appreciate their work

I look at YouTube subscriptions in the same way I look at any streaming subscription, except that I feel that I get far more from YouTube videos than I do from a movie on Netflix or Amazon Prime - both of which I pay for.

Rich I pay YouTube annually which saves me a bit. $139 for the year with no ads. 😅

Coincidentally I just started a three month free trial of Premium. Probably will keep it and downsize other TV subscription. A bargain I think. Just about anything about everything is there. Especially useful for an insatiable curious mind. Movies and music too.

I subscribe to YouTube because I can’t stand the ads. I get that it’s $14 per month but I am on a fixed income with only Social Security as my income source and yet I manage. The ads are disruptive to my viewing experience.

It's not just about the fee for Premium, which I agree is worth it. It's more about it being just one more subscription to keep track of on top of all the other subscriptions. If the ads were shorter, it would be less intrusive -Sometimes an ad goes on and on which, if you are trying to listen while driving, can cause to you listen to an ad for up to 2 minutes sometimes, for some ads I've seen recently.

I totally get it Rich. YouTube is still the best bargain around! Since I cut the cable cord, I watch it tons, and we’re talking the free version. Love it! 👍👍👍

Simle solution… subscribe to youtube premium… it also gives you access to music - without ads. If you can’t afford the price, than don’t complain and put up with all the ads
