IF Putin hadn't already given Sweden and Finland enough reasons to join NATO already, then he most certainly has now, by threatening them with such an ultimatum.

"If you join NATO we're going to point nukes at you"
Weren't they doing that already?

He thinks he can intimidate and bluster into getting his way. That’s his true miscalculation.

This reminds me of WWII when the US and allies were shipping cargo to Europe for the war. We had a heck of a lot of ships sunk with all hands but we were not going to stop supplying Europe. Same thing is happening now. We Americans support Ukraine and all people fighting for freedom and we are maintaining that open pipeline of aid. I'm pretty sure what we have given Ukraine so far is in the billions but if it's takes several billion that's OK with America. Our taxpayer dollars will go towards something we all support for a change.

As a Finn I've hoped for a long time that our country would join NATO. Having a psychopath dictator/kleptocrat next to us is frightening. Together we stand strong🇫🇮❤️🇺🇦❤️🇫🇮❤️🇺🇦

This is if an aggressive violent neighbour broke into someone's home and assaulted the homeowners, and when the neighbours who didn't have home security systems planned to get one, the violent neighbour threatened to attack another neighbour if they did. How is that supposed to prevent people from wanting protection?

If Russia maintains its nuclear arsenal as well as they maintain their other military equipment, I don't think there's anything to worry about.

As a Russian citizen I can tell you that phrase "big miscalculation" reflects almost any aspect of our life in terms of politics, economic, social development and any other directions as well. Unfortunately.
I'm honestly completely against any war as a way to deal with situations. We have all resources to solve any problem.

What would make Russian leadership think that threatening Sweden and Finland would convince them not to join NATO at this point? It really makes you wonder about the disconnect from reality they're experiencing...

"If you call me a psychopath I will do even worse things." Glad we had this talk, Vlad.

Saying that Putin "miscalculated" seems like a gross understatement. What he's done is just disastrously stupid, for Russia as well as Ukraine. So apparently the incompetence shown by the Russian military can be generalized to the Russian leadership as a whole. After all, this is a country whose athletes haven't been able to compete under their own flag for years because they're always getting caught doping. Incompetence seems to be engrained in Russian culture.

This just proves it don’t matter how big your military is if your soldiers hearts aren’t in the fight.

Threatening to use nuke is Putin’s last poker card.

This from Lithuanian newspapers: Russia’s talk about the deployment of nuclear weapons in its exclave of Kaliningrad “seems rather strange", given that those weapons “have always been kept there”, Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anušauskas has said.

Love the Finish answer when Russia threatened them. "Sure come and join the 200.000 of your countrymen whom are already buried here" ... Also Threatening to put nuclear weapons in Kaliningrad - erhm... Suuurrreee because they are not already there!? LOL

I live in Sweden. Does anyone really think Russia doesn't already have nuclear weapons in Kalingrad?

I think we must also recognize the horror at the war crimes in Bucha and how this has changed thinking. We now know with absolute certainty that we are fighting a monster.

Back when I was a once-a-week newscaster on our high school T.V. station, I could not for the life of me say, "Mikhail Gorbachev." I was glad when his nickname "Gorby" caught on. John King handled his flub way better than I did. I think I just went "aaah" or some similar "falling off a cliff" type syllable without finishing Gorbachev's name. --I remember the gut wrenching feeling though. You're supposed to be able to say the name--and then you can't! :)
