This video lesson covers developments in 19th Century Surgery, considering how by the end of the 1800s many of the risks of pain, infection, blood loss and shock were much better managed than they were up until the 1840s. It includes the use of anaesthetics, including ether, James Simpson and chloroform and nitrous oxide. It then looks at Joseph Lister and the introduction of antiseptic carbolic acid.

The lesson is intended to support the Edexcel GCSE History Specification, but will probably be useful for other exam boards too. It should last about at 100 minutes, depending on the detail and depth to which tasks are completed.
