On Saturday, February 9th 2019 there was a celebration of literature at the State Capitol during Black History Month. Words and experiences of African Americans echoed through a structure built by African Americans for whom it was illegal to read. The Read-In, held in the historic Senate Chamber, included excerpts read by authors, musicians, poets, scholars, orators, and more.

Featured readers included North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green; Dr. Valerie Ann Johnson, chair of the N.C. African American Heritage Commission; spoken word artist and writer Dasan Ahanu; and Little Miss Black North Carolina Kenady Joi Holloway.

This event was presented by the N.C. African American Heritage Commission in partnership with the State Capitol, the State Library of North Carolina, and the Richard B. Harrison Community Library.
