The People's Laureate: Jaki Shelton Green

Jaki Shelton Green is the first African American and third woman to be appointed as the North Carolina Poet Laureate. When he chose her for this honor in 2018, Governor Roy Cooper applauded Jaki’s “deep appreciation of our state’s diverse communities”. During her two terms as N.C. Poet Laureate, Jaki has achieved her vision of visiting hundreds of schools and community-based arts programs to share the transformative and healing power of the arts.
