Anthropologists Made a Stunning Discovery About Neanderthals

Anthropologists have uncovered something pretty fascinating about Neanderthals—they might not have completely gone extinct like we thought. Instead, it seems they might have been absorbed into the modern human gene pool. A new study shows that Neanderthal DNA could include up to 3.7% of modern human genes. This suggests that humans and Neanderthals interbred more than we previously realized. So, in a way, Neanderthals are still with us today, just mixed into our DNA.

Thought I was the only one who knew this. My father and I have Neanderthal characterists. Danish lineage. I recognized this when I was in High School 60 years ago. Genes don't just fade away.

I have some very old photographs of my ancestors from the Piedmont area in northern Italy. If they were found to be 50% neanderthal I would not be surprised.

How is this new ? I've heard about our shared genes since I was a child.

Of course they didn't go extinct; they went into politics.

I don't know why people in the comments think Neanderthals are something to snicker about. I'm rather thankful for my Neanderthal immune system!

I have encountered 3 adult human men with sloping foreheads and heavy brow ridges. One was a man I saw on a Chicago bus. He was wearing plastic bags in lieu of gloves and boots. He looked like he had escaped from the Natural History Museum and was improvising on that cold winter day.
The second was an engineer with multiple degrees, editor of an engineering magazine.
The third, a salesman for a printing/binding company.
And then there was an archeologist on Time Team! He has since passed away but did have a sloping forehead.
Those genes survive for sure.

In Africa, no.
Yes Homosapians mixed with Neanderthals just not in Africa

It's well established that the two groups mixed up to recent times, not just during the times given in this video.

One of the oldest written records in the English language has a “troll” interbreeding with a human. In “Beowulf”, the hero Beowulf helped a Danish king fight a “monster” the troll named Grendel, who had a son with the witch who lived outside of the town. Grendel was attacking the king and his men, because they had killed his father.

I love the shot at 3:01 that shows a “Neanderthal” eating a pastry. Just a typical day in the life…

Everytime the camera lingers a little too long on the Neanderthal man, he cops the most adorable expression--like "huh? Aww, me?" BTW, the Neanderthal eyebrows are uncharacterized. It's their underlying brow ridge that looked more prominent.

My Neanderthal disappeared the day I divorced him.

"If you've pacified your curiosity..." My curiosity will never be pacified, but this video is well deserving of a like. :) I love learning. Thanks, Bright Side.

Ron Perlman comes to mind when he played in Quest For Fire. They looked like they didn't need much makeup.

I doubt our most recent ancestors looked so much like apes. And everyone is shown eating raw we discover fire and cooked foods long before?

All humans with ancestry from outside of Africa have a little bit of Neanderthal in them — about 2% of the genome, on average. But people with East Asian ancestry have between 8% and 24% more Neanderthal genes than people of European ancestry.

Nope, we are not extinct. We are alive and well, and doing our best to blend in and prosper.
