You may have seen the recent news from Petra, that archaeologists have discovered a secret tomb lain undisturbed for 2,000 years!

The discovery seems authentic, a collaborative project between a number of respected parties – the Jordanian Department of Antiquities, Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, the American Center of Research, the University of St Andrews and the Discovery Channel.

So how could anyone question it?

Well, not everything is always as it seems, because this discovery was actually made 20 years ago! According to those in the know, this whole story was staged for the Discovery Channel cameras, for the Josh Gates TV Show Expedition Unknown. I’m an archaeologist of Near Eastern religion and lived in North Africa and Middle East for almost a decade. This sort of thing happens more often than people think! So much of archaeology in this region is marred by politics and nefarious motives.

I'm glad I don't watch the Discovery channel. Especially when the network cancelled a Myth Busters episode about credit card insecurity due to pressure from the card companies. That episode could have educated a lot of ppl.

When I hear someone say OH MY GOD for the cameras I think click bait

The Discovery Channel has long been a pathetic joke but it is sad to see the University of St Andrews prostituted.

What tourists see when looking at The Treasury is not the “first floor”.
I remember a story from 3-4 decades ago, I don’t recall the minute details but, it went something like this:
A tourist noticed that the ground changes from hard rock, before walking down the passage, and changes to hard, packed sand/dirt. This person noticed the change and, using basic math, found that the hard rock was at a different angle than the flat sand/dirt ground. That’s when a new lower level was found.

This is absolutely shocking behaviour by everyone involved with this show.

Tourism is the largest source of income in Jorden. Especially at Petra. That wouldn't have anything to do with this.🙄

The local news, in Arabic, mentioned that this discovery was made 20 years ago. Josh Gates needs to go back to cooking shows

At first I was a little apprehensive about this channel when it showed up on the "Recommendation". I'm usually very cautious due to YouTube always going nuts when searching or clicking on something new, but this channel has been great. It's my Scott Manley of archaeology.

Seems like these days the only place you can find truth is on YouTube, and the only place you can find lies is on the legacy media 🤔 thanks for looking into this Matt, a real hero of the people.

The whole issue is based on false advertising because this discovery was originally made by the esteemed Dr. Suleiman Al-Farajat. Unfortunately, his contribution was denied and credited to individuals who have no connection to it, and we don't know who is responsible for that.

I was recently in the hospital and was so bored that I did something I never do, I watched the Discovery Channel. I saw that show and thought it looked staged. But isn't everything on Discovery phoney? National Geographic is just as bad.

I'm sure that's the ONLY thing faked in any Josh Gates production.

Josh Gates said on the show that it was NOT a challis but the top of a jug. They never misrepresented that aspect.

A professional archaeologist would know if someone had been digging there before. There would be records of this and there would be signs of this in the soil. The executives of the Discovery Channel are dishonest and reckless in their behaviour. They willingly distort our history and portray archaeology as an Indiana Jones adventure. Popular Mechanics took the bait with an article written by Tim Newcomb, published on October 18, 2024, citing Josh Gates: “In the two centuries that Petra has been investigated by archaeologists, nothing like this has been found before. Even in front of one of the most famous buildings in the world … there are still huge discoveries to be made.”

If this is correct then I am shocked that serious organisations like St Andrews University would get involved in this - they should be ashamed of themselves. This all seems to unnecessary as a serious documentary could have been made about finally excavating these tombs 20 years after they were originally discovered. They could have brought in the original archaeologists and made them part of the genuine examination and any discoveries. In reality, a genuine opportunity was missed.

This story has come up several times in my feed. I never clicked it because I don't generally believe these kind of stories. And there you go. Great video!
