When Should You Start Beekeeping? Beekeeping For Beginners . Hobby Or Business

In this video I talk about when is the best time to take up beekeeping as a hobby or as a business. This is mainly based on the UK beekeeping / honey market but there will be some excellent points in this video for you regardless of where you are in the world.

Keeping Honeybees is a wonderful hobby and if you're able to turn your passion into a business then that's even better.

Another great video, I started keeping bees at the age of 13 in 1973 and I can still name the suppliers of the time, Thornes, Lee’s, Taylor’s, Steel & Brodie + one local supplier Boone & Wright. Everything you say is absolutely correct, however, the internet can give information overload and their is so much conflicting information it can be confusing. In addition the likes of David Beckham and Sarah Beeny have made it look so easy and stress free people think it’s money for old rope. There is absolutely no substitute for joining a local association, attending training and most importantly a mentor who will keep you on the straight and narrow.

Thank you for the prompt, I started 3 years ago, at the end of the Summer, the whole colony flew away, and I gave up. I'll get started again, now. I live in the suburbs with lots of open territory, but no farms, just woodland, or baseball fields. I hope there are enough flowers to keep them happy.

Question for you 🤔

If a queen lays an unfertilised egg into a Drone cell and a fertilised egg into a worker cell, because of the size of the cell. Why doesn’t she lay an unfertilised (drone egg) into a queen cell?

One thing I had noticed also spoke a lot about to other beekeepers is the prices people pay for a jar.
They were struggling to get £3.50 per 8oz jar here in Yorkshire. Local shops are a only buying in the cheap .99p bottles of what apparently is passable for genuine honey. People are just not reading labels that clearly say blended from non EU countries.
A few guys have stated that online sales of local honey have dropped due to the cheap imitation rubbish available.
I would love to run a business from my hobby/passion even after only 5mth of beekeeping.
But how do I justify a business loan with those worries. ?

I wrote (email)to the British Bee Keepers Association a couple of years ago in response to an event they attended locally on helping to save bees and I was very keen to help. I live in a rural area, with no neighbours on 10 acres surrounded by Norfolk Fenland . I heard absolutely bugger all from them…..
