Three body problem simulation | Gravity simulator

As you all know i was writing a program to simulate gravity. And i was messing around with the simulator to see if i can get a stable 3 body orbit. I didn't able to get a stable orbit. But it was amazing to watch how senesitive the initial conditions are and how the orbit becomes chaotic, with just a small change.

I'm a physicist by training (I'm in recovery), so it's doubtful many folk watching the video will get this but: That was brutal. In the first it looked for so long like we might see a second full triple-orbit, even if not a very even one. But that second... it all just went Pete Tong so fast!

Can we talk about the fact that nature often solves the three-body problem by making it a two- body problem

it becomes a lot more stable if one of the objects have a mass that exceeds 99% of the mass of all the other objects in the system, like the solar system for instance.

Very cool example of chaotic systems. Change an initial condition or just any parameter by a tiiiny amount, and the systems steady state looks completely different.

What's even more interesting is if you look at the steady states with a bunch of different initial values that are super close to each other, you'll see that they (for 1 dimensional systems) form a normal distribution.

That first one might have been what happened to Proxima Centauri

With the idea of 3 star system seems impossible if we sort them by perfect order, but if we perfectly align them base on gravity, 3 star system is possible but adding a planet would be impossible.

I got war flashbacks from trying to simulate the Solar system in Algodoo.

You should use a symplectic integrator like leapfrog or verlet instead of whatever you used here. That would resolve the issue with the orbits decaying for no apparent reason.

A triple system can only exist if a binary system orbits a larger star, which is actually an existing system we can -technically- see in the night sky

what if we place the objects perfectly at the vertices of a equilateral triangle?

Won't a three body system eventually have at least one collision?

Theology guy here. Bear with me. But makes me think of how in this unstable world things fall into a dichotomy, while in the transcendent, perfected heavenly world (from a Christian perspective) God is a perfect 3.

This is not gravity. Orbitating bodies are not so unstable
