UPDATE!
You can do this effect if you have a mid side EQ. Filter the side the instrument is panned to and then make the track mono again!
I find that to be easier!

This video is always growing and I've learn a lot since it. So here is a simpler way to do it

Update Feb 2nd: There is now a YouTube short about how to do it with Midside EQ!!!

Thanks for explaining it! I heard people talking about this before, but they never actually showed how it was done... Definitely a useful sampling technique!

The reason a lot of older music has this kind of hard panning is because stereo sound was only widely introduced in the late '60s, so engineers where experimenting and learning how to mix in stereo for the first time. Hard panning certain things can create loads of space in a mix, so it made a lot of sense. Also, back then, most people were listening to music on speakers, not headphones (as is the case these days), so you wouldn't run into the same issues with hard panning you do now, where the sound disappears from one ear, because you'd generally always be hearing both channels.

Hard panning can still be a really useful technique to create space in a mix, but is probably best used sparingly and left for auxiliary sounds like percussion, FX, etc.

Such a nice technique, and its so clean, you don't loose any frequencies with an EQ!

The L and R trick works well on old soul records, motown records, etc... BTW, they knew how to pan just fine, but at that time they were dealing with bleed in the tape machines too, so they tended to over pan to accentuate the stereo image. Stereo was a big innovation at the time... Anyway, good stuff. You might also take a look at mid/side processing as another way to get at interesting versions of a sample. It takes the insight in this video to another level.

Just checked all of my Audio plugs and they all have two black lines. Thank god you found someone who knew what the issue was, that is something that couldve been easily go unoticed for years

I have a headphone with the same issue that kaytranada talked about in the interview, but the thing that i don't have it's him geniality, anyway, living and learning!
Thanks for the video, i loved the explanation! Keep it up!

You can also try isolating the sides by duplicating a stereo track making it mono and flipping it out of phase.

Kaytradamus has been dope since he was Kaytradamus. His success and meteoric rise is no surprise to those who heard his music back in 2011!

lol 😂 good video man! Appreciate the knowledge on the 1 black line vs the 2 most of all.

You can do the same thing with any song using spleeter gui 🍻 👏

Check out the waves S1 you can do some crazy things like inverting or being able to pull out certain instruments.

I really appreciate you showing this great technique! The only question i have is, won’t this create phase issues?

Paul C did this with a sample of a James brown produced dee felice trio track on ultramagnetic's give the drummer some.

lou that's one big ass mic you got there, hope you're not overcompensating for something else

Yeah this is simply sampling in mono left or right. The older the music, the more likely they have instruments hard panned right or left (like you mentioned).

Stupid question: what are you using to pan the audio file? Also what DAW are you using lol

For deeper techniques check out Ken Lewis Sampling techniques video. Changed my music as a smalle based producer. Good luck
