Cauterize might be my favourite red song ever

You did a good job reviewing. I enjoyed this album Declaration also.
Very heavy album indeed. I also think The War We Made sounds like Already Over and like that one also. I think Gone had to grow on me but I do enjoy a lot of the songs on there now.

9/10 for me. The Victim was probably my least favorite song and I loved Infidel, Cauterize, and Float.

Nice review. I was pleasantly surprised by this album as well. I don't think it's one of the band's best or anything, but there are plenty of awesome songs like Cauterize, Sever, The War We Made, and others. Great album!

I agree with you that releasing a closing track does kind of ruin the finale. It's an excellent album though for sure!

Big red fan. love all thier albums...except release the panic ( that was really bad....like only 1 good song). Gone was not bad but just ok. The rest of the albums before this were outright amazing though. Listened through this album once so far. First impressions is I really really like this album. Not sure where I would rank it yet but really like this album. Wish there was a ballad on there. As for previous albums I would rank them as of beauty and rage ( favorite), then until we have faces, then end of silence, then innocence and instinct, then gone, and release the panic would be least favorite. I definitely think the new album is better than gone and release the panic but beyond that will need to give more listens. Really like this new album though.

Great album. Really enjoyed it. Not their worst but also not their best. Cauterize and Float are songs that I am really digging. Anyway, good review man.

Declaration is wonderful! One of the best albums the band has ever made. I hope that in the deluxe version 10 more songs will come. haha

Long time no see, but I wanted to leave a comment and let you know I really agreed with this. I also didn't hate Only Fight, as I think it's one of the better songs here. Really good review

I really like this album (as I do with every Red album). I find it interesting that they didn't do a softer song like they usually do (I almost wish they had for this one, but it is interesting and welcome to change it up nonetheless; maybe the acoustic versions of The Evening Hate, From the Ashes, or even the Hemorrhage cover could count as the soft songs or bonus tracks.
My only complaints are: that half the album was released in singles (the half they was unreleased is great I think and has some of their best stuff and I am glad they didn't release some of those on the outset, but still half the album?), the drum production sound (just sounds a little too compressed for my taste, specifically in comparison to the drum sound say on OBAR, Gone, or UWHF), and that there are only 10 tracks (which is a small complaint, but I am used to more tracks every Red album, I guess I'm used to having 12 tracks or more like the 15 on OBAR).
Overall I think it's great. Love experimentation on Only Fight as well. Love that they went heavy with this album (which they excell at when they do, but again kind of miss a softer song). But they have done well for themselves I must say after going independent and deciding to continue on (which I commend them for and am glad they've done, and glad they've given us this album).
That is one thing I could say I wish Starset had done on Divisions, in which I wish they had included more heavier parts and less poppy elements, which are fine as well but not when they're overly present and found too much in the sound of the album. The album had great and epic/heavy songs/parts, but not as much as I would have liked personally (or which were underwhelmed by too much electronic/poppy elements) so I am glad Red included a bit more of that epic/heavy sound that makes them them on this album).
Thise are some of my thoughts. Sorry for the long message.

I like this album also however I wouldn’t say it is my favorite by the band. In other album releases, have you heard the new August Burns Red album “Guardians”. Also released the same day this Red album came out.

I thought Sever was a good song
MJ told me Red are an independent artist now
so spoiling there own record was pretty dumb in my opinion but never the less
I’m gonna give the album a couple of listens before giving my thoughts on it

I originally intended to post a comment but I don't think it made it, so here is what I think of the new Red album. This is certainly not their best work, but as a Red album it works. I believe this is the first album that Red has made where there are songs I don't like though, and it's only two songs. Unlike most fans, I think "Float" is very underwhelming and I don't think Mike Barnes was meant for the high screaming stuff. "Only Fight" is by far the worst song Red has ever done. If you look at the lyrics, there really isn't much to the song as it only has a couple of lines that are repeated ad nauseum. Then, the chorus where Mike Barnes repeatedly growls the title is... off-putting and a little grating to be honest. I stand by that Mike Barnes isn't the best when it comes to this higher pitched scream stuff. Since this is the first album where he really plays around with this vocal style, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and maybe he'll improve on this on future albums so it doesn't sound that bad. Other than those two tracks, this album succeeds in my opinion. Of course the singles are good, especially "Sever", and I definitely agree with you on "Cauterize" being a highlight. Easily one of their best and most unique songs, and Mike Barnes' vocal delivery is very unique here, some notable parts being before the first chorus where he channels his grunge side, and the end of the second verse where he sings "The proof of you is written on my skin". Also, the low tuned riff is addicting and I love it when Red brings out the 8-string guitars to add an aggressive dynamic to their sound. They should write their next album on an 8-string because of that. "Infidel" is the closest Red has come to nu-metal since their early days and I like that a lot. Overall, I do think this is one of Red's weaker albums but "weak" doesn't mean "bad". I have liked every album from Red, even "Gone" which gets a lot of flak even though I love that album to be honest. This is another reason why. It probably won't be in my Top 5 or even my Top 10 favorite albums of 2020, but it's still good. The new August Burns Red is killer though. You should listen to it.

For some reason I am getting some 'Alice in Chains' Dirt vibes from the 90s when listening to Only Fight. That drowsy chorus or chord structure is putting me in a grunge mindset. I would give this album an 8.5 out of 10. It is way better than Release the Panic and slightly better than Gone. I would put it on par with Until We Have Faces. Thanks for the awesome album review Zach.
