Thank you for shedding light on the issue! As a live sound engineer, I feel more equipped to solve it now.

This is a really handy tip! FYI If you read this FL Soft Clipper comes in clutch for this, especially if you use summing busses where you route or group instruments for even more control over your mix.

I've recently started sending all my drums to a bus and they get a bit of soft clipping as well as compression and honestly the difference it makes is wild. Kind of one of those things I knew to do but never made it habit until now.

OMG, somebody who knows this! Usually, "experts" don't even know the term "crest factor, " even though it's right there on some meters (SPAN, e.g.). And, yeah, you have to reduce the crest factor to create the potential for a loud mix.

GREAT VIDEO! I didn't know what crest factor was so thanks for enlightening. One thing I always do when I can't get enough lufs is turn the bass down. That, in my opinion is the biggest factor for a mix not having enough loudness aside from crest factor.

Man if i could back 10 years and learn this. I had to find this out myself like 3 years ago. But thanks for sharing this info with the producer world 💪

That’s a good piece of advice! I don’t do mastering but when mixing I always clip my drum bus, my parallel compression bus (I use for attack) and often even a snare sample (to lower the peak while maintaining the perceived loudness of it)

In my opinion, -10 LUFS is loud enough. I always shoot for -11 to -9 even though I could push it louder. But yeah, I agree with the general premise of this video. Controlling the peaks is key. I love doing it in multiple stages. So I might have a compressor and a clipper on the snare. And then I might have a compressor and saturation on the drum bus. And then I have a compressor and limiter on the master bus. Meanwhile, I also have a parallel drum crush. So you're getting like six levels of dynamic control while also having a very controlled parallel drum signal adding energy and volume.

What's the best most convenient way to lower the crest factor? Saturation will introduce distortion. wouldn't a glue compressor come in more handy?

Compression should be your best friend for reducing your dynamic range my friend!

Yes saturation is great, also check your overall bass to hf balance, sometimes you might just be lacking low fr content

dpMeter5 is free and will tell your cf. use wideband saturation like Saturn or spectre to reduce it.

Baphometrix addresses this in their CtZ series in a more involved way if anyone is curious.
