Thank you for this. I retired as a 12Z this past October. I went to the Sapper Leader Course three times before I earned my tab. It is a tough school, and I agree with you about it being a hidden gem. The last time I went, we had two SF guys in our class. They both said the same thing about the 12 miler. The hill around the 6 mile point is a morale killer. The mile long, steep hill at around 8 miles is the soul crusher. The terrain at Ft. Lost-in-the-Woods ain't no joke.

I served in a 12B Battalion at Ft. Drum from 86 - 89. I remember when the NCOs from each company were sent to SLC before the cohorts arrived and some of the NCOs would tell me stories of how the course kicked their butts. Back then, graduates didn't get a tab. It's good to see that the graduates get more than a certificate for their hard work.

Man maybe this is a sign for me to go back to SFAS.. Its crazy because I've been contemplating on giving it another shot. Seeing another black gb just motivated me to go again.

Love it. I went through it as a E5(p). I struggled but finished in the top 10%.
Sadly I had to go fists to cuffs with some in barracks time. I am 5'7" I am not tiny but small to most men.
They respected me in airborne and land nav when I could not only fight as a already combat vet but I got us where we needed to be. Boat PT, I had a horrible time. Men quit before me. Like Airborne, air assault, there was no way I would quit and not do my own fair share. By the way Imy name is Jody. I never took a military spouse. All the jokes for 17 years were on me.
I made them my own before the end....

I started out in Aviation. I retired a Sapper Leader. Best decision I ever made.

I did Sapper in 2000. It was one of my favorite courses I did in the military.

I attempted Sapper Leader Course three times. Made the full 28 days first time but didn’t tab. Didn’t make it to patrolling the next two times. I did not get to recycle due to National Guard funding. It is one of my biggest regrets not earning my tab. 7 mile hill broke me off. Thanks for all you are doing to get folks ready for SF.

I'm pretty sure I'm the guy with the 3rd ID patch doing the Aussie in this clip. Sapper was a lot of fun. 10/10 would recommend.

As a former 12B, it's good to hear this type of info get out. I left active just as Sapper was coming into being, deep respect to all. Finished my time in the NG as a 19D, Scouts Out Sappers

I went 12, to 18C, to 180A.

And to this day, SLC was one of the biggest asskickers I ever personally attended.

Something like 55% of my class passed, and only roughly 35% earned their tab. And those points play on your mind hard, because they never told us if we were getting close, you just went all in and hoped for the best. And the last formation where they called named and said to go in either a left or right building with no knowledfge of what awaited was a massive mind feck. Seeing dudes who were 28 day non tabbers break down and cry is one of the few times I have seen some of the toughest SOBs on the planet do so

I learned so much from my leadership that were sapper Tab or ones that just stuck it out to finish. my fav part of being a 12B10 was learning from the sapper tabs they helped me crush my EQT's

I went as a 12Z with the platoon from my unit. Those young SAPPERS carried me through the course, earned my tab. Essayons

One of the other things that makes that 12 miler tough is the odds are you are going to do it in the dark and you can't see the crest of that hill. It just keeps going and going...
