US journalist Evan Gershkovich has been found guilty of spying by a Russian court and sentenced to 16 years in a high-security prison, after a secretive trial labelled a "sham" by his employer, his family and the White House.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter was arrested by security services in March 2023 while working as a reporter in the city of Yekaterinburg, about 1,600km (1,000 miles) east of Moscow.

Russia accuses him of working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), accusations that Gershkovich, the WSJ and the US strongly deny.

He’s the first US journalist to be convicted for espionage in Russia since the Cold War ended more than 30 years ago.

Why doesn't the Journalists Without Borders organization and BBC show the same kind of deep concern for Palestinians Journalists who are currently in Israeli jails ? Western democracy bias exposed ladies and gentlemen.

This journalist had some peculiar interest in Tanks. What do you think Russia must do when some American starts taking special interest in Russian Tanks?

This is an older, 2015, article but is still relevant.
The 67 UK journalists arrested and/or charged in the course of their jobs since 2011

Over the last five years the UK has arrested more journalists than anywhere else in the Western world. Globally, the countries that compete with us include the likes of Eritrea and Iran.

Although not jailed this article: UK police ‘got it wrong’ by arresting journalists covering climate protests January 18, 2024 08:38:57 pm
Questions over the freedom of the British press have resurfaced following the arrests of several journalists covering the Just Stop Oil protests on the M25.

LBC reporter Charlotte Lynch was one of a number of journalists arrested by police. She recalled the “absolutely terrifying” ordeal in a series of tweets that detailed being handcuffed, having her phone taken and being placed in a police cell for more than five hours. Lynch said it was “blindingly obvious” she was a reporter as she had shown the officers her press ID.

It's so cute how they pretend to have a justice system over there. They have the costumes and everything!
